Quick Quotes
Q. A round of 72, clearly not at your brilliant best. Give us your reflections on the day's play?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I got off to a tough start and back nine, just felt like I wasn't hitting it close enough to give myself enough opportunities. I think that's really kind of what it comes down to. Got off to a poor start and after that, I didn't really hit it close enough to give myself a bunch of looks.
Yeah, that's how you shoot over par.
Q. Obviously unusual for you to be fighting to make the cut. When you get it the turn, what's the mindset and tactical approach when you are making up shots to get up that board?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Try and get some looks. I felt like I struck it better on the back nine but I wasn't able to, I kept sitting there, like good shot into 12, 25 feet. Good shot into 13. Get a gust there. 14, good shot. But it's still 20, 25 feet.
Same thing on 15. 16, I felt like I hit a good shot, and just catches the upslope there, and then I'm in a pretty tough spot to get up-and-down. Hit two really nice shots and just didn't hole them. Putt just didn't go in.
Like the 8th hole, I hit the fairway and I'm in a divot. You know, sometimes -- and then the 9th hole, felt I pretty solid -- just dies. Overall, just not quite good enough.
Like I said, felt like I was hitting a little too far from the hole and wasn't holing any of those putts.
Q. Unexpected weekend off for you now. Five days to prepare for the start of The Open Championship. How does that preparation look now then?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: A little different than I was planning. Figure out how I get down to Birkdale and go from there.
Q. Felt like nothing was going right?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I didn't really feel like I played that bad. This golf course can be just tough at times. You know, there's some humps and mounds out there, and yeah, I'm trying to think, just because it's like -- didn't really feel like I played that bad.
Q. Did you know what you were up against, the par putt on 8, what you needed?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I felt like I needed at least a birdie coming in on my last few holes. I felt like the cut was going to be 2- or 3-under. Trying to think. Yeah, I know I had to make the putt on 8 and I had to make birdie, I felt on 9. Just hit a good iron shot just a little short.
Q. What did you hit?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: 7-iron.
Q. We'll all obsess about the made-cut streak coming to an end, but is that something that you were proud of? Did you think about always kind of getting to the weekend?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Yeah, it's a little different now with some of the Signature Events not having cuts. But you know, this is -- I don't think I finished outside of the top 20 or something like that many times this year.
I'm definitely proud of the consistency, and wish I had a couple days over the weekend to make up some ground. But overall, get down to Birkdale a little earlier than expected and get used to a new course.
Q. The wind changed during the round. Did that hinder you at all in any way?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Not hinder. It did what it was forecasted to do. I think we knew what to expect.
Q. You've never been to Birkdale before; correct?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Correct.
Q. So that will be your first look at it, whenever that is?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Yes.
Q. How much of a positive is it --is the glass half-full or is it half-empty?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Yeah, depends how you want to look at it. Like I said, I'll get there a little earlier than I expected.
This week for me is a week that I really wanted to play well, and this week is a golf course I feel like I can play well on. I just haven't for some reason. I think this is my second missed the cut here.
For whatever reason, I just haven't played my best golf on this course. It could be for a variety of reasons. Like you said, I'll get down there a little earlier than I thought I would and have a couple extra days on the course to prepare.
Q. Back next year?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Back next year. It's funny, like last year, I feel like I got really frustrated on this golf course playing some good golf and just not really able to get anything going as well. You know, then I went and played well at The Open Championship.
So it's suiting me well over the years, but like I said, I haven't played well here but I've played pretty well at The Open.
So it's always a balancing -- it could be one of those things where you just get over jet-lag, get used to new style of golf, new types of grasses, and maybe I just haven't adjusted as quick, or maybe this golf course just doesn't suit my eye much. I'll reflect on that kind of at the end of the year and assess what my plans are going into next season.
Q. It's been four years. Do you remember how much it sucks to miss a cut?
SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Yeah. Was my last missed the cut at this tournament? Memphis?
Q. And then they took the cut away because of it....
