Quick Quotes
JASON DAY:
Q. Jason, can you talk about the four birdies in a row?
JASON DAY: Yeah, I mean, obviously I was playing with Cam Young today, who is co-leading currently. Yeah, I was just trying to keep up with him.
Obviously he had it going early, and the odd thing when you get off to a bad -- a pretty average start, I bogeyed the first hole with a three-putt, but you're just trying to steady the ship and just be patient. You know that opportunities will come.
Statistically I average around four to five birdies a round, so I just knew they were going to come. I just didn't know when they were going to come.
It was nice to be able to have the chances from 12 to 15; hit a lot of good quality shots going into the greens. I also hit a lot of good drives to give myself the opportunities up near the greens on the par-5s.
Q. Jason, did these greens feel almost Australia Sand Belt quality to them?
JASON DAY: I think if they were a little bit firmer and faster, yes. But these greens, they were very receptive today. Yeah, they were very receptive today.
They could have -- it could have been a lot different. I expected to see it a little bit different than what I saw today. I mean, you were hitting shots in there that were spinning.
Typically sometimes you get to, you know, Saturday at Augusta and they're bouncing. It's really difficult to hold some shots.
So I thought the green speeds were lovely. I thought the green firmness was great. It was very fair, and I think that's why you're seeing a lot of, like, decent scores out there, which brings in a lot of the crowd, which is great.
Q. Are the colors a little deceiving then?
JASON DAY: Yes, very deceiving, yes.
Q. You had to stay patient all week. Has that changed at all now?
JASON DAY: Yeah, tomorrow is the last day. You just got to try and get yourself the opportunity on the back side if you can get somewhere close to the lead on the back side, anything can happen. The goal is to try and cut into the lead tomorrow through nine, and if I can do that, great. Then get myself somewhere near the lead on the back side and try and give myself opportunities.
Q. How important is it to stay cool, if you make a bogey, just say I'm still here, I'm still in the mix?
JASON DAY: That happened to me on 16. I had a poor swing on 16. Tried to get a little bit extra out of the 8-iron; I didn't need to. Just pulled it in the bunker, and obviously that's not a spot where you want to miss it. It's quite a large green.
Yeah, I mean, the next hole was a great par save to kind of keep momentum going, because you can definitely go bogey, bogey 17 and then obviously walking up 18 trying to save par up there, and that can be difficult too.
So the two -- the par save on 17 and a nice easy par on 18 definitely keeps momentum going forward to tomorrow.
Q. ... on 15 over the years.
JASON DAY: Yeah.
Q. What were you thinking with your approach?
JASON DAY: Yeah, I just mis-hit it a little bit. I was trying to hit this high draw and I mis-hit it, and it stayed out there. I just didn't think.
It's difficult because of where the wind has been. It's swirling everywhere, and it's enough to maneuver the ball around enough to, like, either pull a shot up short or make it go long. You just got to hit on the right gust.
Obviously it's light and variable, which that's the caddie's worst nightmare to tell you, hey, where is the wind. Very fortunate it stayed up.
Q. You've been in enough -- you've been in contention enough times here on Sunday. What has helped you that will help you tomorrow? What have you learned that will help you tomorrow?
JASON DAY: Just, I mean, I feel like the guys that are leading right now have all the pressure. I'm just kind of -- I'm the chaser. Usually the chasers don't really have a lot of the pressure. Guys at the top of the leaderboard always are trying to defend the lead, whereas I'm pushing forward trying to cut into the lead.
I feel good about my game. I feel very happy with where things are. I'm looking forward to the challenge at least. If I can get myself around the lid on the back side, I'll be very pleased.
Q. How surprised were you by the condition of the greens today?
JASON DAY: I was more surprised about the green speeds. Like, you know, obviously we talked about it a little bit before that the greens are deceptive. They look firmer than what they are.
It's very playable, the green speeds. More so up -- you know, uphill, over slopes are a lot slower than you think, so you've got to give it a little bit more gas going up the hill.
But yeah, the speed of the greens caught me off guard at the start, and then you just kind of settle in as the round goes on.
