Robert MacIntyre

Owings Mills, Maryland, USA

Caves Valley Golf Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Take us through the day. I'm sure big birdie there to extend the lead at the last. Just kind of how the day went for you.

ROBERT MacINTYRE: Yeah, the day was tough. As you would have seen, it wasn't the plain sailing of the first two days, but yeah, I thought I managed it well. Missed it in the right spots. A couple of times I didn't miss it in the right spots. But yeah, it was steady. Holed some nice par putts, missed a couple of chances that I felt I could have got.

But the pins were absolutely brutal. You want to be underneath the holes, and where they cut the pins today you just couldn't get underneath them and you were standing there with 15 feet coming down a steep slope, a lot of time a lot of break.

Even the first hole, put a bunker shot to 15 feet and you're left with 4 on AimPoint, which from 15 feet you're aiming a good three, three and a half feet outside the hole from 15 feet. So there was massive slope.

I thought I done a good job.

Q. Do you at all relish being the spoiler? We saw that moment on 14, obviously crowds with Scottie being in the U.S. and felt like you were ready to give it back to him?

ROBERT MacINTYRE: Yeah, I totally expected it. I totally expected to be in this situation today when I'm in this position. It's going to be the exact same tomorrow.

Yeah, I'll give as good back as I get. Look, I thought I played great. There was obviously a couple of shouts. But no, there's plenty of security there that are hearing it and seeing it, and yeah, I did see them talk to a few people. I don't know if anyone was thrown out, but there was plenty of people to talk to.

Q. You were plenty close on that birdie putt on 17. Did that affect your mentality going into 18, a putt more than twice as long?

ROBERT MacINTYRE: Not at all. I actually thought I had the one on 17. Exact what I'm saying there, you want it underneath the hole but the pin is four from the water. You can't get it underneath it, so you just play past it.

I hit a beautiful 5-iron in there that I thought was a great chance. Hit a great putt, thought it was in. Just moved a lot more at the end.

But no, nothing changes from shot to shot. When it's a tough golf course, when you're in this position, you've got to try and be as level as you can.

Obviously 18, final hole of the day, holing that putt is a massive boost going into tomorrow. That one shot is everything out here.

Q. The escape on 5, how big is that to keep the round going and not dropping another shot there, to be able to get out of jail a little bit there?

ROBERT MacINTYRE: Yeah, it was massive. Look, every save, every shot is a prisoner for me. Yeah, that shot there is no more important than that one I've hit on 18, any of the shots I've hit today. I've played beautifully all week, so it's just about continuing that going into tomorrow.

Q. What did you hear from the fan on 14 and what did you say back?

ROBERT MacINTYRE: Yeah, he was just jeering. He was just shouting I missed it, he's pushed it. Pushed it right in the middle of the hole, I guess.

Q. Does that fire you up?

ROBERT MacINTYRE: 100 percent. It can go two ways. But look, I grew up all my days amateur golf being the one on the outside looking in, faced not fitting, really fighting for it. What we say in the team, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog, and I grew up fighting to be in this position.

Q. There was also that fan on 4, too, so it was kind of starting early for you. Is that something you're noticing throughout the round and you're paying attention to?

ROBERT MacINTYRE: I mean, it started on the first tee. It probably started when I walked down to the range. It ain't bothering me. It's there. As long as they don't do it within -- if they do it outside the shot, it's fair game, but don't do it within the shot that's going to affect myself or Scottie.

Q. How different was the course playing today compared to the last two days, especially after the rain? Do you feel it drying out, get a little fire back in it?

ROBERT MacINTYRE: Yeah, it's just different. The slopes and the greens where the pins were is so severe. It's difficult to actually get a lot of pin positions on the greens because they're so slopey and so quick. But yeah, there's a bit more bite on the golf course today.
