THE 149TH OPEN

July 17, 2021

Jonathan Thomson

Sandwich, Kent, England, UK

Mixed Zone

Q. Jonathan, just a thought on the round. You got the putter going a bit on the back nine, but how would you assess it overall?

JONATHAN THOMSON: Yeah, it was actually -- I played a lot better than my score today I feel like, to be honest. It was tough out there. I just couldn't get any momentum whatsoever. Bounce here, bounce there.

All in all, feel still quite happy with my swing and how I'm playing. Like I say, I just need a little bit of momentum for tomorrow really.

Q. What about the conditions? One or two of the players were talking about some really tricky pin positions; is that true?

JONATHAN THOMSON: Yeah. There's a few absolute beauties out there today. I've got to be honest. The pin on 9 there, it's just -- some of the pins I thought were very, very tough to say the least.

Q. Has the wind got up a little bit?

JONATHAN THOMSON: Yeah, the wind got up a little bit. It got very warm out there, as well, which sort of sacked a bit of energy out of me. The last few holes I could feel it a little bit.

But yeah, I think there's still a score to be had, but it was tough, it was a bit of a grind, and I just couldn't physically get anything going really, but I felt like I played all right really.

Q. The third round, playing the weekend of an Open, were you still able to enjoy it out there?

JONATHAN THOMSON: Oh, yeah, you can't not enjoy that really, playing with Lee there, and obviously he brings the fans in and the noise and stuff. Yeah, it's just all awesome experiences really. Yeah, I did enjoy it.

Q. Was he talking to you a little bit as you went around?

JONATHAN THOMSON: Yeah, yeah, we had a little chat here and there. Obviously it's tough to talk when you're trying to concentrate so hard, and even he's still -- you can tell he's still really trying and concentrating more than ever.

Yeah, we had a few chats here and there when we could, but other than that, it was like business as usual really.

Q. Basically tomorrow just hopefully get some momentum and post a really good score to wrap it up?

JONATHAN THOMSON: Yeah, that would be lovely. But from now I can take a lot of confidence out of the week. I feel like I'm finding something in my swing and it's not an easy golf course. You've got to be on point every single shot you hit. Things seem to be moving in the right direction, so it's good really.

Q. Has your phone just been exploding after that hole-in-one yesterday was on the TV highlights?

JONATHAN THOMSON: Yeah, I think, to tell you the truth, it nearly broke last night. It was just absolutely mental. To be honest, the whole thing was awesome, exciting. I tried to put it in a box, but it was tough last night to do that. I slept horrendous. I think the whole team slept horrendous to be honest. Everyone's phone blew up.

I think that should have calmed down now, and get some good rest this afternoon and go again tomorrow.
