THE 149TH OPEN

July 16, 2021

Scottie Scheffler

Sandwich, Kent, England, UK

Mixed Zone

Q. Scottie, thank you so much for joining us today. Can you reflect on the second round here The Open?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Yeah, I got off to a little bit of a slow start, but I got back to even for the day on No. 7. That was good. I stayed patient. The first few holes were playing tougher than they were yesterday.

After that I played some really good golf.

Q. That's great. Was last week at the Scottish Open your first tournament playing links golf?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Yeah, last week was actually my first time to the United Kingdom, so I'm pretty fresh over here. I've enjoyed it so far. The weather has been good. I really like links golf and it's been fun coming out here, playing, seeing, creating shots, really just having fun.

Q. What has been the biggest thing you've had to do to get ready to play not only Scottish Open, but to play in your first Open at Royal St George's?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: You know, I really didn't change much. I just had to figure out how I play shots on this grass. I never played on this type of grass before. That was the biggest adjustment.

I've always done well on courses that are firm and fast, and so I wasn't too worried about coming over to play links golf the first time. Just needed to figure out the bunkers and the grass around the greens.

Q. You had two rounds with similar enough stats, 10 from 14 fairways in regulation on day one and two and 14 from 18 greens in regulation on day one and two. Is that sort of consistency on a new type of course very helpful when you're looking together low?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: Yeah, for sure. I mean, first things first you got to get the ball in the fairway, especially on a new golf course where I'm not as in tune to where and where not to put my golf ball.

So getting the ball in play is really important. I feel like I've gotten a really good feel for the positions on this golf course and where I need to attack and kind of stay -- or play a little bit safe. So get used to the golf course and I feel like my game is trending in had the right direction this week.

Q. I know you've been asked this a couple times, but when did you start thinking this could be your week for your first PGA TOUR title let alone your first major?

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER: I kind of think that going into every tournament. I'm always looking to try and win golf tournaments, and nice to be able to put myself in a position to win this one. We're only halfway there. I think I'm four shots back going into the weekend, so I got a lot of work to do.
