FORD SENIOR PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

July 12, 2002

Hubert Green

DEARBORN, MICHIGAN

DAVE SENKO: You've tied Jim Colbert's record of 63 in 1995. Maybe just share your thoughts on your record-tying day.

HUBERT GREEN: I hit 16 greens in regulation and only missed two.

I drove in the water on 14 off the tee, hit a 5-wood on the green and made about a 4-footer for par.

I missed the fairway on 18 and I missed the green there, and, of course, I got very lucky and chipped in from a place I should not have been in the first place. That was a very hard chip and got that for birdie there.

The rest of the greens I hit in regulation. I made some good putts, and it was a nice, fun day.

DAVE SENKO: Let's go through your card real quick. Starting off quickly, birdieing the first three.

HUBERT GREEN: I birdied 1 from 6 feet.

Birdied 2 from about six feet.

Birdied 3 from about 20 feet.

I birdied 6 from about 15 feet.

I birdied 8, about an 8-footer.

DAVE SENKO: Do you remember what you hit?

HUBERT GREEN: 7-iron.

10, I hit a pitching wedge about eight feet and made it.

13, I 2-putted the back fringe.

17, I made about a 15-footer.

18, I chipped it in from just the front left of the green.

Q. Have you been playing well or did this round just jump up at you?

HUBERT GREEN: I'd been playing good all year, but my putting has been just horrible, just horrible. I've been working very hard on that. I felt like Sunday's round last week, I felt a little better. I made a few putts yesterday for pars and bogeys.

Starting to strike the ball with a little authority. Still not comfortable with some of think tee shots, like hitting it to the left on 14 and to the right on 18.

Q. You've always been a good putter. Why would your putting be so horrible, for apparently a fairly long time this year, you say?

HUBERT GREEN: Thanks for the compliment about me being a good putter, but I disagree with that. My putting stats were always low because I've always been a good chipper. I would always go at a lot of pints; I always miss a lot of greens. You miss a lot of greens, you chip it two feet from the hole, you become a good putter all of the sudden.

I really am not as good a putter as my putting stats show. But if you look -- I know the stats can sometimes lie. I would love to be a good putter and I've been a consistent putter. From a short distance I've made a lot of putts . I'm getting better at it. I just get in bad situations. You don't do anything when you do it well all the time. There are days when you lose your focus, at least I have in my career, but I'm starting to -- I've tried to look at it, analyze it and figure out what I was doing wrong. I think I've come up with a gimmick, anywhere, for a while, but gimmicks only work for a period of time and then they fall apart and then you have to find another one that works.

Q. Can you talk a little bit about 16, it looked like you were a little steamed. It lipped out on you, but could have been really, really low.

HUBERT GREEN: I'm never going to complain about putts lipping out when you make 9 birdies. That's pretty nice. I had one lip-out worse than that on another hole. Should have went in the hole, too. I was not steamed. I was just -- you know, I was thinking, "I could really go low here," I hit a pretty good shot in there and hit the putt where I wanted to, and that's what makes you more upset.

You're going to hit some bad putts. I hit some bad putts today that went into the hole, but not where I wanted to hit them. That putt I hit right where I wanted to, but it spun out.

Q. (Inaudible.)

HUBERT GREEN: No. 5. That was a much worse -- but, hey, I only made three putts in the first three holes. So I'm not going to sit there, just life goes on. I'll never say the round could have been lower; you'll never hear that come out of my mouth. When you make nine birdies, that's pretty damn low. Don't get too piggish out here. The golfing gods have the last say, and they have two more rounds here before they are through with me.

Q. Did weather have an effect on today's rounds?

HUBERT GREEN: It's a beautiful day out there. The wind is not too -- as hard as it was yesterday. Today is nice. It's not hot. It's very enjoyable. Nice place to be.

Q. There's been a lot of low scores the last two weeks, a 60 and a 64 yesterday. Do you start thinking, "Boy, if I'm going to be in this thing, I have to go low"? Or do you start the day that way?

HUBERT GREEN: Not really. You just go out and play each shot one at a time. You birdie the three holes just like I did. Yesterday, I think Hale birdied the first four holes, that's a good start. You've got a good chance of shooting low now, because the eggs are broken; you can make the omelette.

Q. They call it a major on the SENIOR TOUR, does that get you extra incentive this week, or do you approach it the same way every week?

HUBERT GREEN: They don't call it a major. It is a major.

It's always more important to win this than win any other tournament because it's a five-year -- inaudible -- it's just a nice little thing to have. I don't have any senior majors. My friend, Fuzzy, has one, and he's a rookie for crying out loud.
