U.S. SENIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

July 9, 1999

Hale Irwin

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA

HALE IRWIN: Well, it was a round in which I felt like I really had pretty much command of what I was trying to do and the front nine. And I hit a very poor second at 10, from that point on I don't think I hit another golf shot. I didn't putt particularly well all day, but, you know, the front nine I was very solid and boy, after my second shot at 10, and succeeding shots, I just -- I don't think I hit another birdie putt with the exception of the 16th hole for 8 holes. It was hit-and-hang-on. The conditions got a little worse, I think, here this afternoon, so, we didn't get the best of the conditions, but that is no excuse, you got to go out and play and I just didn't play well at all.

Q. Trying too hard to make birdies?

HALE IRWIN: No, I was trying to just play good golf. This being only Friday, we have a long weekend to go. I am not out of it by any means. If I felt like I was out of it, I would pack my shoes and get out of here. I certainly have to play better. I have to play the next several days the way I played the front nine today. I played very solidly. I played really good, but it just escaped me and characteristically so, I didn't play good golf for eight holes out there. Very disappointed. I think I just need to kind of step away from this for a moment and collect myself and get ready to go tomorrow.
