HP CLASSIC OF NEW ORLEANS

May 3, 2003

Brian Gay

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

TODD BUDNICK: Like to welcome Brian Gay. Thank you for joining us. 4-under 68 today. Everything was going pretty smooth up until the 18th hole. And that hole has gotten a lot of people this week so far.

BRIAN GAY: Yeah, it's a tough hole. I was having a good day. Played real solid all day again. Didn't putt quite as good as yesterday. But I was going along nicely. I hit a bad tee shot on 18. Not the finish I was looking for, but I'll just have to forget about it.

TODD BUDNICK: How hard is that? Ending a day like that, you're playing pretty well, you're still close enough that you got a shot to win tomorrow, but overnight how do you deal with that?

BRIAN GAY: Well, hopefully I'm going to get rid of it as fast as I can. Think about all the good things I've been doing. Just really that's the first bad decision I made this week. That second shot there. At least I probably would have made no worse than a five if I would have chipped it down the fairway. But that stuff happens.

TODD BUDNICK: Go ahead and walk us through as the TV went off at that point.

BRIAN GAY: Okay. You saw the drive. The ball hopped just out of the bunker about a foot and a half. My only stance on grass was if I aimed 60 yards right of the green. Otherwise I would have hit it in the bunker or I could have just chipped it down the fairway. I thought I would hit this thing right and I asked my caddy, I was going to hit a big swinging hook and just bring it in there. He liked it, so I went for it. And I didn't really think I could overhook it. I just tried to, really tried to hook it as hard as I could. And with a 4-iron it never got up real high. It just really hooked. I thought it would run up through the waste area into the green side bunker and it stayed in the waste area, but it went up against the edge on the left side. So I was standing in grass there with it below my feet up against the edge of the bunker. I got like a 40, 50 yard bunker shot.

Q. (Inaudible).

BRIAN GAY: Totally different shot.

Q. (Inaudible).

BRIAN GAY: Well it was flat. The ball was below me and I had the ball -- where the angle was, the back edge of the bunker, just on the right there. It was only about this far from the edge (Indicating) it was right on the edge. And I had a 60 yard bunker shot and I just tried to hit it as hard as I could. It came out in the green side bunker with about 10 or 12 feet short from there.

Q. (Inaudible).

BRIAN GAY: I should have just chipped it down the fairway and hit a sand wedge on the green.

Q. (Inaudible).

BRIAN GAY: Yeah, he was pretty hot with the putter most of the day. I don't know how close he hit it, but at some point he just started playing really well. He only made one bogey, didn't he? On 16? Well, given how low the scores are, to be leading by three.

Q. (Inaudible).

BRIAN GAY: It's certainly not insurmountable.

TODD BUDNICK: Will you look tomorrow at the start of the day, do you expect anyone to pull away?

BRIAN GAY: Yeah, I definitely don't expect it. It's would have been nice to be in the final group. But I'll just keep trying to go out there and shoot as low as I can.

Q. (Inaudible).

BRIAN GAY: I do. I played really well. I played good here. It's a good time, a good tournament, a lot of good food. I just like coming here.

TODD BUDNICK: Starting with the one on No. 2. The birdies, Brian.

BRIAN GAY: No. 2, second shot over the green. First cut of rough. I chipped it to about four feet.

Number 5, I hit an 8-iron about 8 feet.

9, I hit a 9-iron about 8 feet.

11, I hit it left of the green, past the pin, off the left down the hill. Pitching across the green, I chipped it up about a foot and a half, two feet.

12, 8-iron to about 8 feet.

16, I hit a sand wedge about three feet.

And you heard about 18.

TODD BUDNICK: Any further questions? All right. Thank you, Brian.

BRIAN GAY: All right. Thank you.
