CANON GREATER HARTFORD OPEN

July 31, 1999

Tim Andree

Terry Conlon

Henry Hughes

CROMWELL, CONNECTICUT

JAMES CRAMER: I'm sure everybody has heard we had a slight change to our plans for tomorrow. And we have Henry Hughes, the chief operating officer of the PGA TOUR, with Terry Conlon with the Canon Greater Hartford Open and Jaycees, and Tim Andree with Canon USA. I'll turn it over to Henry just to let you know what we'll be doing tomorrow.

HENRY HUGHES: Good afternoon, everyone. I'm sure everyone has seen in the local affiliates in the newspapers we have a bad weather forecast for tomorrow. Based on that forecast, we are changing the start times for tomorrow's final round. We will be commencing play at approximately 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning and concluding play at two o'clock. This change is difficult, obviously, but based upon the forecast, this gives us the maximum options in getting the tournament completed tomorrow. We have to do that keeping in mind the safety of the fans and the players who are out here. As I say, this decision is being made and we need some assistance from you to communicate this to the fans. We apologize for any inconvenience for the fans coming to the tournament, but in working with Greater Hartford Jaycees, Canon and CBS Sports we have made this decision and will move forward along those lines.

TERRY CONLON: On behalf of the Jaycees, we again support PGA TOUR's decision in concluding play tomorrow the way we have lined it up. Due to the fact that volunteering is a huge part of our business, and if we risked going into Monday, our volunteer base would basically diminish; so we support the PGA TOUR's decision.

TIM ANDREE: And from Canon's perspective, we really believe it's a smart thing to do. We have a very good partnership with the PGA TOUR and the Jaycees. And given the weather forecast that we have been monitoring for the last few days, it came time today where we had to make this decision to make sure that the play concludes on Sunday, which we all want, and for the safety of the fans. Again, echoing Henry's remarks, we're really asking for help from the media to make sure everyone gets the word about the weather. Tomorrow morning and afternoon looks very feasible for golf, very playable. What we are expecting is heavy thunderstorms late in the afternoon, which is why we're trying to conclude early; so the weather should not be an issue in the early morning hours. And we just want people to clearly understand that we want them out here. Please don't avoid coming out. But we're going to have an early conclusion. So it's been a great week of golf. It's going to be a great day tomorrow. We're going to conclude with a fine champion on Sunday.

Q. How unusual is this for something like this to happen?

HENRY HUGHES: As unusual as meteorology can be, I guess. It happens from time to time. It happened one time earlier this year. What we basically do, we have our meteorologist on site. We're talking with the Weather Channel throughout the last few days. And based upon the information we have, we try to make the decision as early as possible, and have it be a sound decision, not a last-minute decision; to try and get the information out.

Q. Which tournament did that happen?

HENRY HUGHES: Honda Classic.

Q. Did you make the schedule change for that forum the day before?

HENRY HUGHES: It was made the evening before.

Q. How much of this decision has to do with Duval and Tiger's match on Monday; was that factored in at all?

HENRY HUGHES: Absolutely not. The only factor here is completing 72-holes and having a champion for the Greater Hartford Open.

Q. Normally you want to have the winner finish on 18; how do you schedule off of 1 and 10?

HENRY HUGHES: Leaders will be off of 1st hole. And obviously, we'll have half the field on the 10th hole. But it would be a rarity on an 18-hole tournament that the winner would not finish on 18. With 36 holes that sometimes can happen.

Q. Twosomes or threesomes?

HENRY HUGHES: Two tees and threes.

Q. What if severe weather ends up hitting tomorrow morning and it gets wiped out tomorrow. Would you go to Monday, or is that out of the question?

HENRY HUGHES: We'll definitely go to Monday to finish 72 holes. And as I mentioned before, the reason we're making this decision is to increase the possibilities we have of completing 72 holes on Sunday. But if, in fact, we're not able to finish tomorrow, we would go to Monday to complete the tournament.

Q. What time do you think you'll finish tomorrow?

HENRY HUGHES: Two o'clock.

Q. What exactly are your meteorologists saying?

HENRY HUGHES: Basically, what we're told -- and Stuart Williams is here and you can talk to him after -- but basically we expect to have some light rain in the morning which will be remants of storms this evening, and there will be a cold front that will move through. But we feel it is going to occur during the time we would normally be playing golf if we tried to reach six o'clock.

Q. Severe? Is there severe weather accompanying this front?

HENRY HUGHES: It's a cold front, I'm told, and that could bring severe storms in front of it.

TIM ANDREE: Predicting the weather is not any of our jobs. It is quite possible there may be no weather tomorrow afternoon.

Q. There will be weather, but it may not be bad?

TIM ANDREE: It may not be bad. (Laughs). But the whole idea is that we want to make sure to give as large as possible window so that we can finish on Sunday. If it's a fine weather situation after two o'clock, well, that's fine. We can all go home and watch the telecast on CBS. So you get two great hits of golf that day.

Q. Do you expect this to hurt attendance or will people just come earlier?

TERRY CONLON: That's one reason we're tying to get out to the media to notify the general public that we will, in fact, be starting earlier; so we don't anticipate any drop in attendance.

Q. Did CBS have any problem with this, not being live?

HENRY HUGHES: I don't know if it's a problem. The optimum would be to have a live telecast. But based on all the information, we informed CBS, and technically they will be able to deliver the show. It will be tape-delayed 3:00 to 6:00.
