BUICK CLASSIC

June 22, 2003

Sergio Garcia

HARRISON, NEW YORK

Q. You played well and put yourself in position, but that last hole put a damper on it.

SERGIO GARCIA: Yeah, it's okay. I played well. I didn't do the right thing on the last hole. I was aggressive on the second with a 3-iron and I just drove it three or four yards too much and got a horrible lie, and when you get one of those lies in this thick stuff, you never know how the ball is going to come out. It's just one of those things. I think I played well and put myself in a good position to win. That's the most important thing.

Q. After struggling a little bit this year, did you need a round like that?

SERGIO GARCIA: Not at all. I've been working. I've been working pretty hard. You guys probably don't notice because you haven't heard too much about the normal guys. I've been working hard. It's been coming along. I played well last week. Unfortunately, I had one bad round and a bad nine holes on Sunday. It's been coming long. You've just got to be patient. Things don't come overnight and you've just got to work hard on them, and when you do those things and believe in yourself...

Q. (Inaudible.)

SERGIO GARCIA: Yeah, I've never finished worse than 12th. I've finished, second, first -- looks like probably fourth or third, something like that, today -- and 12th. So it's very good. I just like the course. It's just fits my eye and I feel comfortable on it. I know I can do well.

Q. As basic as you can, your swing, have you cut it down a little bit?

SERGIO GARCIA: No. I'm actually hitting a little longer. Mainly I went -- my takeaway, it's a bit more in-line instead of going out. What's that's making me do is make a bit of a longer swing. The club, it's more towards the target on top and I'm aiming more towards the target. Before it used to be quite a bit left. So then, I don't need to lag the club as much, and I'll still have the lag, and I'm going to have it because it's a good thing for me. It's just a little better.

Q. Your putter was working pretty well today.

SERGIO GARCIA: Yeah, I made a couple bombs out there. I made some short ones, too. You know, they all even up, the ones you make from the ones you miss. But I think I was happy the way I putted. I've been struggling with my putting, too, and I've putted well last couple of weeks, even though maybe I didn't make as many as I would like to. I hit some really good putts, and that's the important thing. You know, just keep it going and we'll see what happens.

Q. When you mentioned normal guys before, do you put yourself in that group? Most people look at you as a star.

SERGIO GARCIA: That's what it look looks like because even though I come to tournaments, you guys don't know anything that I'm doing. So you're probably focusing on the guys that are playing maybe a little better, but that's fine. That's the way it is, I guess.

Q. We're here.

SERGIO GARCIA: Yeah, because I'm playing well. (Laughter.)

Q. Your confidence level, the fact that you finished 10-under but you played well, is the swingboard, as far as confidence, is that the issue here?

SERGIO GARCIA: You know, even though I finished 35th last week, I was confident. I was confident with the way I played and I was happy with the way I hit the ball. You know, you just take it slowly, as every week goes on, and you know, when you feel comfortable, you feel better on the course. You know more or less what you're doing, and that's what I've been working on. It's starting to come along. I just need to keep going.

Q. Were you thinking about winning, about putting yourself in position on the back nine?

SERGIO GARCIA: Of course I thought about winning this thing. That's why I was so aggressive on 18 and that's why I ended up making a 6.

I thought 12-under is going to get me to a playoff; 13 is going to win it. I felt good on the shot. I just tried to draw a little 3-iron in there, and unfortunately, I just drew it too much.

Q. Thought you needed eagle to win it?

SERGIO GARCIA: To win it, yeah. To win it -- to not go to playoff, I thought, yeah, I thought so.

Q. You've been clear for a lot of years that your goal was to become No. 1 in the world, so you're making the adjustments --

SERGIO GARCIA: That's why I did it.

Q. How close do you think you are to reaching that goal?

SERGIO GARCIA: I don't know. It's going to take time. You can't say in a day.

Q. Did somebody convince to you do it, the swing changes?

SERGIO GARCIA: No, I talked to my dad and my family and we decided to do it.
