Press Conference
ANNIKA MAYERS: Okay, joining us ahead of the 2026 Maybank Championship is Ronni Yin. Ronni, you have previously won this event. Can you just talk about what it means to be back and competing in Malaysia?
RUONING YIN: I mean, I always love to come back because we have one of the most crowd here, amazing crowd here.
Of course I won here two years ago so I would love to do that again.
ANNIKA MAYERS: You won the FM Championship earlier this year and you talked but how there was a time you felt you were never going to win again, and you went on and won again at Buick in China a few weeks ago.
Can you talk about how your confidence is following those two wins and how you're feeling heading into the end of the season?
RUONING YIN: Yeah, 100 percent. I think I got super close a couple times and couldn't get it done, and I think after FM just boost my confidence. I think my swing, every part of my game I feel good about it, so I'm just hoping to have another good week.
ANNIKA MAYERS: As you head to the end of the season, can you just reflect a little bit about what this season has meant to you so far.
RUONING YIN: I think this season I definitely improved a lot, especially on my putting. My putting, my mental I think is stronger and stronger, so that's what made me happy the most.
Q. You won this event in 2024 and there is no repeat winner since then. What would it mean for you to actually be a repeat winner?
RUONING YIN: I did not know that before you told me, but I think that means a lot if I'm the first repeat winner. I think that's my goal for this week as well.
Like I said my game feels good, so there is -- I have a lot of confidence to have another good week, and hopefully I can sit in here on Sunday.
Q. And you won in Shanghai recently. What is it in your game that you would like to take into this week?
RUONING YIN: Shanghai, I think since FM my swing, my swing feels pretty good, but Shanghai my putting didn't work that well. But I did some adjustment last week in my off week, so I'm just hoping that my -- I'm just hoping that my putting can do some work because I know I can give myself a lot of birdie chances.
I just need to make some putts.
Q. Last year you had a very strong finish here as well. What is it about the West Course that perhaps suits your game, maybe suits your eye?
RUONING YIN: I think the West Course is -- this course is always in good condition. The putting green is I think one of the smoothest putting green on our tour.
I mean, it's a challenging course for your tee shot, but luckily I'm not hitting that far so a lot of holes I can't reach, so I would say that's one of my strengths.
And if I can put the ball on the fairway I have the confidence for my approach shots that I can hit pretty close and make birdie.
I think all the par-5s are not very far. I think two of them are reachable. So there is definitely a lot of birdie chances on this course.
Q. I read somewhere that you grew up in basketball; is that true?
RUONING YIN: Yes.
Q. Okay. So is there any instincts that you take from basketball that you translate onto golf?
RUONING YIN: I don't really think so, because my caddie always told me, Ronni, you're such a good athlete. Just if you can see the ball and react. Sometimes I think I think too much over the ball.
So I would say -- because I can shoot pretty good. I'm a shooter, so I would say for the long putts and short game, sometimes I just look at the target, look at where I want the ball landed. So I just look at the target and just react.
I think that's (indiscernible.)
Q. Hi, Ronni. So you know are here a couple times, and you at this time of the year can get real wet and humid. Is there a way to tackle this week with the weather?
RUONING YIN: I have checked the forecast. Definitely going to be a wet week. I think the course drains pretty well. I played nine hole this morning. I think looks pretty good. I mean, the fairway draining looks pretty good.
Just I think you just need to be prepared for the weather. I think it's the same for everybody. So, yeah, just need to be prepared.
