Quick Quotes
Q. How do you feel about your round today?
MINSUN7 KIM: It's really exciting to shoot under par, especially since this is only my second LPGA event. I'm also really excited to have the opportunity to compete against such great LPGA players for the win tomorrow.
Q. I understand you're planning to pursue the LPGA Tour after this season. With today's round moving you up into contention, it looks like you've put yourself in a position to potentially earn your spot directly. Does that make this opportunity even more exciting? How are you approaching the final two rounds, and how much are you thinking about winning?
MINSUN7 KIM: Winning wasn't really my goal coming into this tournament, so I'm already happy just to be in such a good position. Now that I've got this opportunity, I've been trying to focus on my shot tempo and routine over the last two days. The LPGA players tend to play a little faster, so I think if I can avoid getting caught up in their pace and just stay focused on my own game, I have a chance to put up an even better score.
Q. You made eight birdies without a bogey through the first 17 holes today. You then moved into a tie for the lead with a birdie on the 17th. What was working particularly well for you today, both with your putting and your ball-striking? And what felt different compared with your previous tournaments?
MINSUN7 KIM: Yesterday, my ball-striking was really good, but today I felt like my putting was a little off compared with my shots. As for what was different from my previous tournaments, I changed my putting routine recently and it's still taking a little getting used to, but I've been trying to really focus on it. I think it's helping me play with more confidence because I'm committing to my decisions, so that's been a positive change.
Q. Could you explain a little more about what you changed in your putting routine?
MINSUN7 KIM: Before, I would sometimes let what I was seeing affect my setup, which could throw off the alignment of my body and putter head. To fix that, I've started picking one clear reference point and then stepping into my address position in one go. It's helped me get better alignment, and I feel like I can trust the speed I've committed to when I make my stroke. That's been a really positive change.
Q. I'd like to ask you about the course setup today. How have you found the course, particularly in terms of its length and how it's playing?
MINSUN7 KIM: I feel like KLPGA courses tend to play a little longer overall, especially the par 3s and par 5s. But at this course, the wind has been a big factor. On most of the par 5s, we've had a helping wind, which has made it easier to reach the green in two.
And on the par 3s when we're playing into the wind, it seems like they've adjusted the setup, such as moving the tees forward, so we're not having to hit excessively long clubs. I feel like they've done a good job of setting up the course with those conditions in mind.
Q. (Is there anyone in particular you'd like to be paired with)?
MINSUN7 KIM: I haven't really thought of one particular player, but I'd love to play with Hyeran. She's had such great results in Korea and has also won two majors in the U.S., so it would be an honor to play alongside her. I feel like the players on the LPGA Tour are a level above me, so no matter who I get to play with, I think I'll learn a lot from the experience.
Q. (What stands out to you about the LPGA players, and what can you learn from them to play at that level)?
MINSUN7 KIM: I feel like LPGA players are definitely a level above me in a couple of areas. They have a wider variety of shots in their arsenal, and they commit to their decisions without second-guessing themselves. Those are things that really stand out to me.
One area I want to improve is my routine. I've noticed that LPGA players trust the shot they've chosen and just go ahead and swing without hesitation. That's something I'd really like to learn from them.
I also feel that their short game around the greens is much more solid than mine. I know my short game is an area I need to work on, so I tend to focus quite a bit on it during the off-season. Whenever I watch LPGA players around the greens, I find myself learning new ways to play certain shots and thinking, "Oh, so that's another way to play that shot."
