Milwaukee Brewers
Pregame 4 Press Conference
Q. The pressing question everyone back home is wondering, have you seen the viral Milwaukee Brewers song video? Has it stuck in your head if you've seen it?
DL HALL: Yeah, we've seen it, and it's stuck in a few people's heads for sure. We hear it probably eight to ten times a day.
Q. Obviously knowing what's at stake tonight, how do you guys stay mentally balanced knowing, just taking it inning by inning and not getting too far ahead, making sure that you guys stay locked in?
BRICE TURANG: I think just during the season we continue to push to win every pitch, win every inning, win every game, and we've got to do that tonight as well. Win every pitch, win every inning, win on all sides of the ball, and win tonight.
We just want to win every game that we're a part of. So no matter what the situation is, it's about winning tonight.
Q. DL, we know early on in the season how hard you had to grind to get the mechanics, everything in sync the way it is now. Just how much are you enjoying the role that you find yourself in in so many of these games?
DL HALL: Yeah, it's been awesome just to be healthy and get my body to a point where I feel like I can just focus on pitching and getting outs. It definitely makes it a lot more fun than having to worry about something bothering you or just trying to deal with those little nagging injuries. It's been a good feeling this year just to work back and actually feel like I'm in a decent spot and just go out there and compete.
Q. Following up on that, last night when you come in with two on and you're facing a couple of righties and you're able to use a variety of different pitches to attack them, do you feel like that sort of encapsulates, embodies the work that you've put in and the development that you've had, where you have those weapons to attack those right-handed hitters?
DL HALL: Yeah, it's been cool to just kind of watch myself change over the past couple of years and find what works for me. It's cool to reap the rewards of that work. It obviously gives me a lot more options when I do have a little bit of an expanded arsenal.
It's nice to feel comfortable facing lefties and righties and just kind of knowing that I can try a few different things to try and get outs.
Q. DL, when you and Joey came over in that trade from the Orioles, you guys had both had some ups and some downs. You're obviously in an up period now. Do you ever think about your tenure with the Brewers and how it seemingly worked out to your advantage?
DL HALL: Yeah, it's a blessing. I think everything definitely happens for a reason. I think me coming over here, obviously it was a big thing. I think it was a blessing for myself and my career, my family.
It's been nothing but good things here, and I think that a lot of the development I have had probably wouldn't have happened had I stayed where I was. Those downs taught me a lot, and I think going through them here was huge with these guys because they always believed in me.
Over the past two years, they knew what I had in me, and I think that gave me more reason to keep pushing until I found myself again.
Q. For both you guys, you have a very young team, but you have two players that have been with the Brewers through this entire run of success they've been on. And on the position player side, you have Christian Yelich, and on the pitching side you have Brandon Woodruff. Can you both just speak to those two guys and what they have meant as teammates and helping be mentors to all of the young players as they've come up?
BRICE TURANG: They make the clubhouse go. Their experiences and just teaching us some of their experiences or wanting us to be better in certain aspects of the game or teaching us the game, you learn. As you are in the Big Leagues, you're still learning all the time. And those guys are the guys to lean on to ask questions, or sometimes they're just there to help you learn. Not only that, they're phenomenal people outside of baseball.
They're a big part of the reason why we go, and they've had experiences that some of us have never had, and they're trying to teach us those experiences and how to get through them and stuff like that. They're definitely a big part of this for sure.
DL HALL: Just going off of that, obviously I'm around Woodruff a good bit, being a pitcher, and I think not only vocally but watching him go about his business every day over the last two years and watching him battle back from his injuries and stuff and just how he comes in every day and attacks and treats every day the same whether he's active or not. Just showing that resilience, I think it teaches a lot of us and a lot of the even younger guys how to go about your business.
Q. Brice, you've been with this organization for a long time now. I know you were raised in a baseball family, but what did you know about the Brewers? What did the Brewers symbolize or stand for before you were drafted, and what have you learned about the Milwaukee fan and how much this would mean to them since?
BRICE TURANG: I would say before -- like I didn't really watch much baseball as a kid growing up, so I don't know much about baseball history. Now that I'm a part of it, learning the history of and how much it would mean to the city is -- yeah, it would mean a lot.
They've gone through the bads and the goods, and they've stuck with us. And they're really good fans. They show up to every game. They're passionate about baseball. Any sport in Milwaukee or Wisconsin, they're very passionate about.
We love them just as much as they love us. It's been fun to be able to play a part -- or to play with them in the stands.
Q. Brice, you grew up in Southern California, and I can imagine that when you first got to Milwaukee four years ago, there might have been a bit of a culture shock. Is there a moment or a point over the last four years where Wisconsin felt like a place that was home to you and not just a place where you lived and where you played?
BRICE TURANG: Yeah, it does. We're there for six months of the year or whatever, and they treat us phenomenal over there. You see them on the street, they're very welcoming. They're very nice. And they support you. So it kind of makes you feel like you're at home a little bit when you have the comfort of the fans. It's been awesome. I'm very blessed to be able to be with this team and in this city as well.
Q. DL, a big theme this postseason, really the whole season, has been the response by you guys. Whether you get down in the game or someone isn't doing as well as they want, whatever it is, you guys respond and pick each other up. What about this group makes you so good at doing that?
DL HALL: I think it all just comes from us being so close and just being like true friends. Just like even outside the field, it's like a family. We all just want to pick each other up. I know we say it a lot, but it's true.
Like when you see one guy down, like we all just want to just somehow pick him up. Whether it's the offense doing it like last night or another bullpen arm coming in and picking somebody up, whatever it is, we just all want to help each other because we all care about each other personally.
Q. Brice, because you spent so much time talking baseball with Yelich, what do you think just being in the position you are going into this game means to him in particular? Since he's the only guy who goes back to 2018 when they were close, 2020 they lost to the Dodgers, and then last year against the Dodgers. Does he ever talk about those past clashes and what it would mean to get through this time?
BRICE TURANG: I think it would mean a lot for sure against anybody. I mean, this is -- we always say you've got to beat the best to be the best, so against anybody in this situation, it means a lot.
Maybe more for him because of his past or whatever, but yeah, I don't -- I'm not going to speak for him, but it means a lot in general just to get -- you know, against anybody. You've got a good squad over there, and we've got to go out and be better than them.
Q. Has he ever told you about how close they were in 2018?
BRICE TURANG: I actually was -- when I got drafted was 2018, so I remember kind of the end of the series. I think I went to one of the games here. Yeah, they were very close. They were into it for sure. Sometimes they talk about the memories of that stuff and kind of what to do better at the next time you go round.
They're all learning experiences. It happens, and you learn from it, and you move on so you don't let it happen again.
