ROLEX SHANGHAI MASTERS

October 14, 2026

Daniil Medvedev

Shanghai, China

Mixed Zone

D. MEDVEDEV/S. Tsitsipas

6-4, 7-5

Q. What is it about your two games? When you put you guys on the court together, you always play fun matches.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Yeah, I mean, I think it's just that we are both good players. Sometimes we play a bit better, sometimes a bit worse in terms of throughout the season.

But, for example, this one, I think Stefanos in the beginning of the season maybe was not having the best time. But when we played a match, I felt like he played better than when we played in the semifinals of slams.

And that's, you know, in the one match, everything is possible. We both now know how to hit forehand, backhand, so I'm happy that I, in my opinion, managed to do it better than him today.

Q. You played very well this season. But I think the consistency you had here in China, what does it mean for you? Because we always talk about consistency, and in this moment of the season, you are one of the few guys having it.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Look, I don't like to, I want to say that I'm playing great as well. But I feel like the balls here, which are the same since three weeks, the courts suit me well. Like, I feel like I understand what I'm doing on the court. I understand which shots I want to make. I'm not thinking, like, why the hell is my backhand going into the net when I was practicing it for three weeks, but it doesn't go in, referencing the U.S. (laughing).

But it's okay. Look, just try my best, whichever week I have. Even in U.S., when I was losing first rounds, I was trying my best. I'm happy that here my best is better than sometimes there.

Q. Gael Monfils is officially retiring. I don't know if you saw it.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: It's a bit of a strange story, so maybe you can tell me more, I don't know. Who put him on this list? Does he wanted to retire?

Q. Yes.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Okay, then it's good.

Q. I wanted to know your opinion about him. You played him five times, I think, always big battles, and what you think of him as a guy and as a player.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Super fun. Super tough to play against. Especially, I'm going to say something, especially when you are up in the score it's very tough to play against him. Because he relaxes and starts going for everything, tweeners and stuff like this.

But, look, I hope, first of all, that he's okay, because for sure I would guess he wanted to play Paris and stuff. So if he retired, I don't know what's happening, but I hope that he's enjoying himself, that he's feeling good. Amazing career, and probably one of not many guys that probably there is not one guy who is going to say bad things about him.

Q. You seem to be running into some very good form. How afraid should the other players in the draw be of running into you?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Well, to be honest, I think when you get in the quarters of a Masters, let's put it this way, everyone should be afraid of everyone. Because, like, Bergs beat Alcaraz, Paul beat Vacherot, the defending champion, and I guess I'm playing them.

So, they are playing great as well, but just trying to play my best level. When I'm playing my best level, I know that I'm tough to beat.

Q. One more question about the match. Would you say it was a more straightforward win for you in your, I guess, long history with Stefanos, and how much of that win would you credit to how your own game has changed.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I would say, for sure, the first set. The first set I was on top of him, I think I had break points every game, and one game, no break points, but Love-30.

Second set, different story. Very tight one. I'm happy that I managed on 5-All to get some good returns, get some good rhythm in, and break him.

But, in general, happy with my match, and happy with the way I played, yeah.

Q. In your experience, you many times qualified for the ATP Finals. This time, how is different the chasing the goal till the end of the season? For you, is it anything different in the attitude you have towards the game or not?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Look, it's all about results. If I played strong in Canada, quarters of, and continued my results here, and didn't lose 200 points somewhere last week, I would probably be officially qualified.

So it's just about results. If you lose first round, maybe you are not in Turin. If you make quarters every Masters of the year, you probably are in Turin. So just trying my best, and if I'm there, perfect. If not, Maldives is good as well.
