Press Conference
ZHENG QINWEN/M. Andreeva
7-5, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Mirra, obviously maybe not the result you wanted today, but a fantastic two weeks here. The new WTA No. 3 come Monday. Reflect on the last two weeks and talk about some of the highlights.
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, I think overall of course it was a good tournament. I mean, a lot of positives to take from these two weeks.
Of course, I felt like today just wasn't meant to be. I don't know. I think after also talking with Conchita, I will be able to look onto this match maybe from a different perspective and see maybe some good things. So yeah (smiling).
THE MODERATOR: Questions in English.
Q. Qinwen wasn't landing the majority of her first serves, but still winning a lot of those points. Why do you think that maybe was, that you had difficulty trying to find a footing on her service points?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: I just think, of course, she's a great server. I also think today I missed a lot of returns trying to go for it, trying to be more aggressive. Sometimes it worked, but most of the time I just felt like, I don't know, I wanted to go for it but couldn't really find I guess the margin, couldn't really find the rhythm, as well.
Yeah, I don't know. I will probably need to look at this match and just see why, try to improve and learn from that.
Q. In terms of this match, you had good position in the first set. You had obviously your chances in the second set, as well. Back to the end of the first set, what happened there with the string of points? Was that Qinwen elevating or was that something where you regret anything on those points?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Well, I think when something doesn't work out, you always regret of maybe not doing something.
I mean, if I remember those three set points that I had, two of them, the first set point, I think she served on the T, a great serve. I returned not so good. Plus-one. Then I put a lob. She finished with a smash. Not much I could do.
The second set point, there was a second serve. I could have taken more risk. I kind of went for it, but I still wanted it to be kind of safe. But I still thought it was a good return. A long point. Maybe I could have taken more risk, try to be more aggressive. After the third set point also she finished the point with a volley.
I mean, of course, if I look at that, if I try to bring that back, maybe I would do something different of course to try to change the outcome. Now it is what it is. The only thing I can do is to try to do something different on the next match that I have.
Q. I heard what you said about hoping to hear your Chinese nickname. I just want to tell you that there are many people cheering for you. During your whole tour in Beijing, what is one moment you feel especially proud of?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: I mean, one moment? I think I can say what for me stands out the most, the match probably I had against Alexandrova. I think that was a pretty tough one. Also getting my first win over her. It was a pretty nerve-wracking match for me.
So yeah, winning that match on two tiebreaks, I think that would be I would say one of the toughest matches that I've had here. For me, that stands out the most.
Of course, I mean, I know that some people are still supporting and some people, they want to show support, I don't know, to kind of support me. Still, I mean, it's kind of hard to compare the support, especially today.
Yeah, I mean, I know that there were still some people out there that were cheering for me. Of course, thanks to them. It's always very nice to hear some cheering, even when it's not super fair, but that's okay (smiling).
Q. You played Qinwen two years ago here. Over the past two years, you both have evolved, achieved so much. From your perspective, what has Qinwen changed? Qinwen also congratulated you during the trophy ceremony. Could you please share your thoughts on that.
MIRRA ANDREEVA: To be honest, I don't really remember much from our match two years ago. I remember, of course, that it was tough. We played three sets. I don't know, I just remember that it was tough. I don't really remember what was happening during the match.
So yeah, I mean, for sure today she played great. It was also very nice of her to say such a nice thing to me. So I really appreciate it of course, as well.
She also mentioned, of course we all know, that she's had a tough year. It's also very nice to see her playing better and coming back.
Yes, I think that she's going to be raising her level even more soon.
