Quick Quotes
Q. You Monday qualified all the tournaments you played in this year?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Yeah, except for the Senior PGA. I got in off the Money List. Just Monday qualified. Living the dream.
Q. What went well today? Obviously a lot.
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Yeah, no, it's probably the first tournament where I played sort of how I played in all the qualifiers. Shot a lot of good numbers in qualifiers, a lot of low numbers, and sort of the feel like I can finally relax a little bit instead of just putting so much pressure on myself.
Played nicely and made some key putts and made a nice sand save on 17, which kept my momentum going. Yeah, it's just the sort of day you have when you shoot 10-under. Everything kind of goes your way.
Q. These conditions suit some people better than others. People tend to like greens that are soft and receptive. Is this just something that fits you?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Yeah, I hit the ball a long way and carry it long way, so as far as the par-5s, had a lot of shorter clubs than some of the guys so you can be a little bit more aggressive.
So I'm driving the ball well. The course plays quite short and when the greens are soft it's a big advantage. That's sort of the main advantage. You can see a lot of guys top of the leaderboard, they move it.
Q. Do you allow yourself to get ahead of yourself before tomorrow?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: No. That's the thing about the Champions Tour. We've all been doing this for long. The pitfalls are getting ahead of yourself. The scoring will be great, another 9- or 10-under tomorrow, and if I don't go out and shoot a good score I'm not going to win the tournament.
Q. You ever look at what do I need to do to solidify myself out here? I mean, you know what you need to do. Ever think about that?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: No.
Q. And not have to come out on Monday or Tuesdays?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Yeah, if you win that's the only way it avoid it these days really. This late in the season, a top two or three finish probably doesn't do much for me on the Money List. It's win-or-go-home type thing. Literally.
Q. Where was the Monday qualifying? Was it here?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: No, up at Sawgrass on the Dye Course. Yeah, just before -- I mean, the weather was too much fun. Rained.
Q. It was Tuesday.
MATTHEW GOGGIN: It was Tuesday, yeah, yeah.
Q. Was it because Monday was too wet?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: No, because the tournament before finished on Sunday so gives guys a chance to go and play a practice round or whatever. So if there is another tournament the week before it's a Monday. If it's a tournament week before it's a Tuesday.
Q. Is there any difference between the mentality of Monday qualifying and coming out here?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Yeah, Mondays you just have to play well. Like you don't get -- there is no options. It's not like you can struggle for nine holes. You got to play good to get in the tournament.
Over three rounds you got a little bit more time to work yourself in the tournament. If you have a scratchy nine holes it's not the end of the world. You can turn it back around with a really good nine holes.
Qualifying is just really have a good day or -- that's your attitude, just go play well.
Q. When you got out here did the course kind of suit what you were looking for?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Well, I mean, we played nine holes, got rained out; played six holes and got rained out. The course was so wet.
Yeah, being able to take advantage of the par-5s is the main strength of my game. Taking advantage them this week and that's been the key to keep my round going.
Q. It is a tournament record, so is there anything that gave you a sense that today was going to be a really...
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Not really. I was rolling the ball well which is always a good sign. See the ball go in the hole in the putting green and then the first couple holes hit some good putts and then you're sort of off to the races.
I drove the ball well and that's really the key. If you drive the ball well and got lots of wedges and short irons and middle irons on the par-5s you can sort of get on a roll.
Q. You also mentioned the par save at 17.
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Yeah.
Q. Was that much of a pressure situation for you?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: I mean, again, it's just sort of -- there is so long to go in the tournament and the scoring is so good. You can't sort of think like, now, this is important. You're just sort of in the bunker and like, I would like to get this up and down. Hit a pretty good bunker shot, made a really good putt.
Q. There was break on the putt but that just never seemed to be outside the middle of the cup.
MATTHEW GOGGIN: No, no, it was just a little left center putt; rolled it in.
Q. Not to harp on these things or bring up the negative, but have you kept track of how many times you failed to Monday qualify this year?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: It's probably three or four times. I think I made five or six. I've done pretty well.
Q. Half dozen tournaments?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Yeah, yeah. Not a bad strike record. Assuming you got to shoot 7- or 8-under every time you play.
Q. And you're probably going to have to do that tomorrow?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Absolutely. So I got a one-day qualifier.
Q. There you go. So assuming it's almost definitely going to play the same way tomorrow. No chance it plays different?
MATTHEW GOGGIN: No. No. Unfortunately.
Q. That's if they can move the tees back a little bit.
MATTHEW GOGGIN: Yeah, they can do stuff like that, but the greens are so soft there is not much you can do. They're not rolling out.
Q. Nowhere to hide.
MATTHEW GOGGIN: No.
