Quick Quotes
Q. Ryan, great round out there today. 9-under, ten birdies. Take us through what was working for you.
RYAN ARMOUR: I tell you what, it was really nice to have fresh greens. Being second off greens rolled way better than I expected after all the rain we had.
Made a lot of putts on that front nine to turn, and then had some kind of hiccup swings on the back, but was able to get it up and down on 16, which is a crucial up and down.
And then hit a nice little 6-iron in there on 17 close to make another birdie.
We just -- we had a bead on the wind early, and it was supposed to come out of the east, started coming out of the southeast. My caddie, Jim, made a great call on when it was turning to that, and we were able to have a lot of looks and poured them in.
I got to give credit to Vaughan Taylor and Joe Durant who I played with. We drafted off each other all day. They had 7-under and 5-under, so it was nice seeing a lot of the putts go in it.
Q. Assuming there wasn't a whole lot of roll out there --
RYAN ARMOUR: No.
Q. -- did they help with you the tee placements?
RYAN ARMOUR: I tell what, they had some up quite a bit that I wasn't expecting. I've never been a long player, so that helped, but it was more into the greens. I was so shocked that -- think I made a great birdie on the par-3 on the back, 12 I believe it is, and I pulled that 4-iron left of my target and just stuck right there.
Whereas if we had any bounce I was probably in the left bunker, so I got fortunate there.
That's where I was more surprised on the greens. You knew the fairways you weren't going to get roll, but into the greens, I mean, we had multiple times where our ball just landed in its ball mark and stayed right in its ball mark.
Q. Forecast was wrong today, off a little bit, and unless it's really off the coming two days, how much extra stuff do you pack, assuming it might be a very long day and might be a little sloppy?
RYAN ARMOUR: I don't. Just my rain gear. I won't bring extra stuff out. I never have.
Q. For the caddies pretty much...
RYAN ARMOUR: Yeah. I mean, we are fortunate out here on the Champs Tour that we have carts, so we might stay a little more dry than normal.
But, no, I won't pack anything.
Q. What's the transition been like this year being out here, rookie?
RYAN ARMOUR: I mean, took a while for me to get used to it again. As soon as I had more reps under me, you know, it felt normal.
I just didn't play enough my 49th year, and then when I turned 50 I was still kind of in dad mode, and now I'm in play and grind and I'm enjoying the processes again of trying to get better.
Q. Best round of the season today? Most birdies.
RYAN ARMOUR: Yeah, I'm not going to throw best round yet, but definitely satisfied with especially how I rolled it, because you're going to get some bumps out here because of the weather, how much rain we had.
The putter felt really good.
Q. When you haven't got th best reps like you said the 49th year, how does that show up when you're 50 and you get out here? Is it short game or is it something else?
RYAN ARMOUR: Yeah, it's just I was always a good driver of the golf ball, and I would hit a couple each day where I was like, where did that come from?
But in this between shots more. You're on a big 8-iron or a little 7-iron and you just don't have that feel to carve that 7 in there to take the distance off, little stuff like that.
Q. And you can draw a straight line from that to the fact you didn't play enough tournament golf?
RYAN ARMOUR: Right. Absolutely. More reps and more under-the-gun competition. How is your body feeling, how is it reacting, how is the ball spinning.
Q. Over the years a lot of guys have said that, that they get to be in their late 40s, and they're like, I need somewhere to play, mini tours, try to get it going.
RYAN ARMOUR: Yeah. I had it kind of planned out to play down in the Bahamas right before I turned 50 on the Korn Ferry. And then they took away the 48, 49 for those events because they wanted more of the young kids in. It's okay. We're here now. (Laughter.)
