Q. All right, Rod, great round; 8-under. Take us through what was working for you.

ROD PAMPLING: I made a lot of really long putts early, which, yeah, got the round going, which I hadn't been doing.

But, you know, the game hasn't been great all year but it was nice to see it all happening today.

It was fun. As I say, it was nice to see the course. It was amazing out there. We're riding on the fairways. So cross fingers we don't get too much rain coming in.

But, no, it was a fun day.

Q. Speaking of fun, that eagle on 14, can you take us through that?

ROD PAMPLING: Yeah. Obviously the tees are up a little bit, but hit driver, 4-iron. That was one of the big putts. That was like a maybe 25-, 30-footer. So, yeah, just rolled perfect; went straight in.

Yeah, first one for the year as well, so there is a lot of firsts this week.

Q. When you talk about the long putts, can you give some examples of how long those early putts were that kind of got you going?

ROD PAMPLING: Well, on, what was it, one, two, three, that was like another 30-footer. So three and five are two big putts.

Then I holed one on 15, on the par-3. That was a bit of a curly one, so that was a 20-footer. So three in the first seven holes that were like just great to see go in to get the round started.

Yeah, played really solid all the way through today. One little hiccup there, other than that it was good.

Q. Can you describe kind of the mental lift that you get when you see a long one go in?

ROD PAMPLING: Yeah, it's just, you know, you always try and make them, but it's just getting them somewhere near the hole from that distance. Yeah, when you see it tracking straight in, yeah, it's great.

We don't get to see too many go in, but it's good when they do. And then to have three in the first seven was even better.

Q. You mentioned the softer conditions, although it held up well. When you come out on a day like this, do you think, I have to shoot something in the mid 60s to get myself in the mix?

ROD PAMPLING: No. You're still not really sure what to shoot because we haven't played the course before. Yeah, it was soft. As I say, the fairways are amazing. We were on the golf carts out there and there was no marks.

The greens were just -- they weren't rolling anywhere so you could be a little bit more aggressive than normal.

But the guys hit it pretty solid, so the course is set up a little bit short, but it was still -- it was there for the taking. We had no wind, which we get the wind coming in on the weekend, it'll make it tough.

Q. You did compliment the course maintenance people.

ROD PAMPLING: Uh-huh.

Q. How many courses after getting as much rain as we've seen the past three days maybe would been ready today?

ROD PAMPLING: Oh, this is total of one that would be ready like this. This is it. The amount of rain we've had, it's unbelievable.

The way the grass and the base under is very good.

Q. You had knee surgery earlier this year. How are you doing and do you feel like you're back to 100 percent?

ROD PAMPLING: It's good. I played the one event at the start of the year and had a good finish there, but it's been a -- it hasn't been great but it's not bad. Like I can still swing, but it hurts. Like it's still sore now.

As the doctor said, it's a year before it's ready, so I still hobble around out there, but we're doing a lot of work to get it right.

So it's just time. It'll be fine.
