AL DIVISION SERIES: WHITE SOX VS GUARDIANS

October 9, 2026

Gavin Williams

Cleveland, Ohio, USA

Progressive Field

Cleveland Guardians

Workout Day Press Conference

Q. Gavin, we just had Vogter in here a few minutes ago, and his quote was Gavin wants the ball. We want him to have the ball, and it's his game. What's it mean to you to hear something like that?

GAVIN WILLIAMS: It means a lot. I know after the game last night, I was walking by his office and I told him I was ready to go. Whatever to help the team win, that's what I'm going to do. Doesn't matter the role at this point.

Q. Gavin, I know you want the ball, but how are you feeling coming off yesterday and how much did that hindsight replicate what you would have been doing between starts if not pitching in a high-stakes game like that?

GAVIN WILLIAMS: Yeah. The body feels good right now. Been in the training room all morning just figuring it.

But it's just a normal day really. I throw a pen on those days, and everybody knows it. So there's nothing different. Just being able to fill the mound in a game-like situation is even better at that point.

Q. Gavin, can you just walk us through kind of getting up and getting into that game last night?

GAVIN WILLIAMS: Yeah. It was at the point of I was just getting up to throw my normal pen, and then they called down, and they're like, get hot. Didn't think it was going to be that quick, but that's how it went.

Q. Gavin, you've faced the White Sox several times this year. What do they do well as an offensive team?

GAVIN WILLIAMS: They wait on their pitch really. You gotta throw it in the zone. They don't chase a lot. They got a good plan, one through nine. And I'm just going to have to execute and do what I know how I can do.

Q. Did you learn anything new from them about them in facing them in Game 2 of the ALDS?

GAVIN WILLIAMS: Yeah. They're still a hard team to pitch to. There's nothing really to learn at this point of the season. It's probably five or six times I've faced them now. So I know what they got, and they know what I got.

Q. Gavin, have you ever had a situation before where you've pitched like -- where you've done something like this, pitched in relief and then come back two days later and give it a go?

GAVIN WILLIAMS: No. Not in my professional career, that I can think of. I know I probably did it in college a few times, but it's definitely totally different atmosphere from college to here.

Q. Gavin, I mean, obviously winner take all kind of game like this, this is the type of game you kind of dream of being able to pitch in. How do you regulate emotions going into something as high stakes as this?

GAVIN WILLIAMS: Just what I said the other day before Game 2, you just gotta think of it as another game. Can't really think of it as win and go home type game. Everybody has a job, and they know their job, and you just gotta execute it.
