ROLEX SHANGHAI MASTERS

October 5, 2026

Wu Yibing

Shanghai, China

Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the press conference of Wu Yibing. We'll do English questions first and then do Chinese. First of all, we know you had great results at the Asian Games. Could you summarize your recent weeks and what your expectations are for coming to Shanghai.

WU YIBING: Hi, everyone. Of course, every year playing here, it's like a dream come true. My first tournament ever that I watched, it was right here in the stadium.

I had a pretty good couple weeks, and did some really good training, plus the Asian Games. I mean, one match away from my gold medal, but still silver is still good. It's my second silver medal. I tried my best. I gave my everything on court like I always do.

I'm just happy to be here again. I'm a little bit sick, but never a big problem for me.

THE MODERATOR: Questions?

Q. Can you talk about your great match with Carlos Alcaraz here in 2024. What are your memories of that?

WU YIBING: Well, I still watch highlights sometimes about that match. I think both of us played great tennis. It was my third match of the tournament. I like the court here, fast court. I always enjoy to play Carlos. His style, his shots are one of the best on tour.

Plus the fans here are supporting me, and it was maybe one of the best matches that I played in my career. Hopefully I can do good as well this year.

Q. Have you noticed an increase in popularity in tennis in China in recent years? And can you also speak to the development pathways for players. We've got three good tour events, we've got a challenger swing, can you just speak to that.

WU YIBING: Of course, I mean, everybody in the country can feel that tennis has been developing pretty good this year, thanks to our Olympic champion Qinwen. I think she really inspired a lot of female kids also just to be able to know the sport, how beautiful it is.

I think it's also a responsibility on us, like on the male players side, that we try to do our best on court and people around us can see, okay, how good this sport is.

Now there is also my home tournament, Hangzhou, which it's been played now for two or three years too. It's a shame I missed it this year because of the Asian Games, but it's always good to be back in China playing tournaments.

Although we are not as lucky as the European players or the Americans, they have like a longer season in their home base. But one month, it's a really long time, and it's great that we have 500s, 250s, plus Masters and multiple challengers and futures for our young generation to be able to get points earlier in their career. I think China, we are having a really great future in our tennis.

Q. Can you just talk about what it's like to play in front of home fans here at this tournament? And also, 2026, how would you assess your year so far?

WU YIBING: Always be very happy playing here in Shanghai. I was going through my social media, and many fans they send me like messages about they're going to bring different, like, photos or like little weird stuff for me to sign. I always enjoy that.

And 2026, it's been a great year for me, I think. I'm playing injury-free, able to play all the tournaments I want. I'm having my first, I think, really healthy season with no major issues on my body.

Hopefully it goes on in the next two months. I still have big room to gain my points because last year I didn't play anything after the Masters. I was playing the National Games so I didn't play any ATP events. So hopefully I can do good here and plus the rest of the season.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in Chinese.

Q. I want to ask a question about you and Coleman Wong. I know that he is going to play qualifiers on the center court. Do you want to play with him again? How would you comment on his performance?

WU YIBING: Yes, I think he is in very good form ever since the beginning of this year. He also played an excellent match in Hangzhou. Also, he played very well in the Asian Games.

He also said that he would come to Shanghai immediately after those matches to Shanghai for the game. Of course, I also hope that he can keep in good form and play good games here.

Q. I know that you have been injured in the past, and then you also mentioned your health issues during the Asian Games. So what's your situation now?

WU YIBING: Well, it's not any injuries on my body, it's just because of the flu. I played both singles and doubles, so I spent almost the whole day at the venue during the Asian Games because I played both singles and doubles. Also, I have the commute time from the venue to the hotel is also a little bit long, more than an hour.

I think I am sort of exhausted and got the flu. But I will try to get back to my best for this tournament.

Q. What are your expectations for this Shanghai Rolex Masters? Do you have any specific goals?

WU YIBING: I'll take it match by match. The priority is to get over this cold quickly. I don't know yet when I'll play -- it should be a few days from now. I didn't practice today. I'll start tomorrow and slowly ease back in.
