AL DIVISION SERIES: YANKEES VS RAYS

October 5, 2026

Trent Grisham

St. Petersburg, Florida, USA

Tropicana Field

New York Yankees

Pregame 2 Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: Trent, thanks for taking the time. Appreciate it.

Q. Trent, this team has done a really nice job of bouncing back throughout the course of the season. Just what do you think it is about this group that allows you to turn the page fairly quickly?

TRENT GRISHAM: I think we've just got a good group of veteran guys that have been through it to kind of lead the way and set the example for the younger guys that we have. I think everybody just kind of trusts each other.

We just come together and are able to bounce back. So hopefully we keep that up.

Q. With that in mind, how much does it help this team's confidence knowing down 0-1, you have Cam Schlittler on the mound? What is the level of confidence heading into tonight?

TRENT GRISHAM: Yeah, Cam's our guy. We've got a lot of trust in him. At the end of the day, we have to go out and do it. We have a lot of confidence in Cam. Have all year.

Q. Trent, were you among the group that worked out at GMS yesterday?

TRENT GRISHAM: Yes, ma'am.

Q. About how many guys would you say were over there?

TRENT GRISHAM: 10, 15, 20, something like that.

Q. What is the offense feeling right now after getting shut down, essentially, in that Game 1 and trying to bounce back? How do you go about that?

TRENT GRISHAM: Go in with a sound plan and execute it.

Q. Just what's the plan against Freddy Peralta?

TRENT GRISHAM: Stack good at-bats together. I think every plan is individualized. But as a team, just continue to put pressure on him and good at-bats together.

Q. What makes him so tough in particular?

TRENT GRISHAM: He's got a good fastball. Faced him earlier in the year. Pretty good change-up, too. It's just about getting him where you want him. You're always susceptible to something. We all know that. But kind of being stubborn and getting him where you want him and doing that as a team.

Q. How big would it be for you guys to be split going back home?

TRENT GRISHAM: At the end of the day, we need to win three out of the five here. And one tonight gets us closer to that.

Q. Trent, was there -- what is the benefit of that workout at Steinbrenner Field, as opposed to here? What equipment can you use that you didn't have here?

TRENT GRISHAM: Benefit for me is that it's closer to our hotel.

Q. That was the deciding factor?

TRENT GRISHAM: For me, yes, sir.

Q. Trent, how would you describe Cam behind the scenes in his pitching days? Some of you have talked about his ability to block out the peripheral noise around a start, especially a big start. Just how would you describe him?

TRENT GRISHAM: From my view, he's quiet on his start days. That's probably the best way I could describe it is he's just quiet. Goes about his business, gets ready.

Q. You kind of laughed at the start of that.

TRENT GRISHAM: Mm-hmm.

Q. Does he crack jokes? Does he make you guys laugh? Does he do anything you can talk about publicly?

TRENT GRISHAM: I think when you get to know Cam, it's just something that makes you chuckle about him. It's hard to put words to. Yeah, he just makes you laugh. And it's not really necessarily what he says. It's kind of just how he goes about his business, his personalty.

So, yeah, anytime someone brings up Cam, I kind of chuckle to myself.

Q. Trent, what have you thought of the way Spencer and George have handled themselves here with the first taste of the postseason and everything that comes with that?

TRENT GRISHAM: I think they've handled themselves well getting called up here. This is a huge market and a lot of tough questions get asked, a lot of tough jobs are asked of those guys especially when they're younger. For them to come up and have a veteran presence about them, while at the same time asking a bunch of thought-out and smart questions to kind of help them along the way and using the guys around them to help the transition, I've been very impressed with both of them.

Q. Has Spencer kind of picked your brain about any of that?

TRENT GRISHAM: Yes, me and Spence have had numerous conversations about different parts of the games, what I thought on certain plays, yeah. Just anything really baseball that he kind of questions, that's what I really respect about him is he'll -- he's not scared to ask questions and try to learn and try to get better.

Q. One Cam question, and then one about you. For Cam, have you ever seen him doubt himself?

TRENT GRISHAM: No, I have not.

Q. And then for you personally, I know you wouldn't be out here if you weren't healthy enough, obviously. But given what you've been through health-wise, have you had to make any adjustments offensively, defensively of where you would be at full health to perform this time of year?

TRENT GRISHAM: No, ma'am. I haven't had to make any major adjustments. Just more awareness of -- I've had two hammies this year. So just trying to prepare better. That's really the only thing that's in my control. Definitely just a lot of prep work, making sure everything is right before the game starts. When the game starts, it's the same game.

Q. I know you're back and playing, but do you feel the hammie at all right now?

TRENT GRISHAM: I feel good.

THE MODERATOR: Trent, thanks so much.

TRENT GRISHAM: Thank you all.
