Press Conference
A. ZVEREV/Shang Juncheng
6-0, 6-3
THE MODERATOR: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the press conference of Shang Juncheng.
Sorry this is not the best day for you. Could you please share with us what happened on court today.
SHANG JUNCHENG: Yeah, I mean, super happy to get on Diamond again. But today I didn't give my opponent a chance to compete. I thought the match was pretty comfortable for him and pretty miserable for me.
Yeah, first time ever in my life I wanted to get out of that tennis court so fast because I wasn't feeling good. I was feeling pain. I was uncomfortable.
Yeah, that's basically what you guys saw.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in English.
Q. What was the pain you were feeling? What was the physio helping with?
SHANG JUNCHENG: Yeah, first yesterday during my doubles with Alex, I felt a little bit on the abdominal. So serving was quite difficult. But I think overall I served great yesterday in the doubles match.
Today was, like, questionable. Coming in, waking up today, I was feeling tight about the abs, didn't know if I could do it full speed, playing full speed. I was warming up with cautious.
Everything was good. I got to the first set, broken first game. I was feeling already uncomfortable on the returns. Slowly and gradually the pain got worse.
Yeah, I mean, that's basically it. I was not comfortable on the court.
Q. Your matches have been full of vibes so far up until tonight in singles and doubles. What has your experience been this year in total if you look at it so far?
SHANG JUNCHENG: Yeah, I mean, just another happy week that I can compete in my hometown, with a lot of fans supporting me, as always.
But tough end to the tournament. I'm still unsure about doubles tomorrow. I'll try my best to get on the court and try to be healthy again as soon as possible.
The last two years has been not very kind to me. I've been trying to get healthy. Getting injured, trying to get healthy again, which is what I'm doing now with my team.
Yeah, just trying to look on the positive side and trying to be healthy.
THE MODERATOR: Questions in Chinese.
Q. You talked about your doubles tomorrow. What kind of way would you adjust yourself to prepare for the doubles tomorrow?
SHANG JUNCHENG: I don't know yet because I'm not feeling comfortable right now. I would have to sleep first, then we'll talk about it tomorrow morning.
Q. A lot of people are saying that you have this sense of being laid back. How do you balance the pressures while enjoying the matches?
SHANG JUNCHENG: I think the description is not that accurate. Everybody has a side of being laid back as well as a side of nervousness. In my first match I admit I was really nervous. The whole body was quite rigid.
I might be showing somebody that I'm really relaxed. I'm trying to enjoy the matches. In each matches there are relaxed moments, upset moments. I try to enjoy the match, absorb each point, trying to learn from each point and also fight for each point.
Q. This is the first time playing Zverev. Playing against such a top player, what did you learn, especially the rhythm and intensity of the match?
SHANG JUNCHENG: Undoubtedly he's one of the best players now. I'm really honored to play him on the same court.
Today I wouldn't be able to say anything. I'm not really challenging him. He is playing on his own terms. I'm not really putting any pressure on him.
I wasn't healthy enough to play this match. I congratulate him. I wish him the best.
