St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland
Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: Welcome three-time winner to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. You have had some remarkable success over the years here. What do you enjoy about this week so much?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, this tournament has been very good to me over the last ten years. As I've said in the past, just the relaxed nature of this week helps me out a little bit. And yeah, last year had some good fun and looking forward to it.
THE MODERATOR: Playing on courses with this much history, never gets old, what would it mean to win for the fourth time and create more history in Europe?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, it's always special being back here at St Andrews, and Kingsbarns and Carnoustie are great, as well. St Andrews has a special feel about it.
There's a lot to play for with Ryder Cup points, Race to Dubai points. I've been down on the rankings the last few months and be nice to have a good week here and start working away on that.
Q. Winning here three times, is there one that stands out above the other two?
TYRRELL HATTON: Probably 2016 because that was my first win on the DP World Tour, and that was, what, '24, '25, and I dreamed of winning on The European Tour. And yeah, so to achieve that here was unbelievably special.
So yeah, I'd probably say that one, if I had to rank it.
Q. This is the 25th anniversary. What is it that makes it a special week for you?
TYRRELL HATTON: For me now, being able to play with my dad, that's really special, and I think you can see that some is of the other players try and play with their parents. There's not another week like this. It's a great week. You just hope that you get some decent weather to go with it. Last year we were pretty unlucky with the wind and the rain, but the forecast looks nice enough for this week for this time of the year.
Q. After Presidents Cup, Brandt Snedeker was quite bullish afterwards that the Americans are going to be a problem. What do you make of that?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I sat and watched it on Sunday. Yeah, obviously there was a lot of red on the board, and yeah, the U.S. Team were unbelievably strong on Sunday, which I think probably everyone expected them to be. But yeah, to just sit on sofa as a neutral and watch it and enjoy it was really fun.
Q. Do you expect the U.S. Team will be the same --
TYRRELL HATTON: Well, still a year away. There will be quite a few of those guys, I would imagine, will be on the team in Adare. The U.S. always have an unbelievably strong team at the Ryder Cup, and Adare will be no different.
Q. Building on the 25th anniversary, you talked about being special to play with your dad. Do you have any sort of memories with your dad that stand out?
TYRRELL HATTON: Not that jumps to mind right now. I'm trying to think of maybe some of the shots that he might have had or whatever. Obviously in 2024 when I won the individual week, we finished second in the team. I think we were leading the team going into the final round. So it would be nice to achieve that.
Playing with my dad is just so different and a unique experience this week. Either way, he finds it very special, too.
Q. Looking back, what scorecard would you give yourself this year?
TYRRELL HATTON: I feel like it's been an unusually inconsistent year. The last few years have been pretty consistent with where I finish most weeks. But yeah, this year has had some highs and some lows, which it's easy to in this game.
Obviously winning at Valderrama was really cool. Masters, that was, again, a nice week. The four majors, struggled to have that kind of finish. Certainly nice to prove myself wrong, although my results have gotten better and better over the last couple years.
Yeah, it's just been an inconsistent year. Once the season is done, if I don't finish the year very strong, then naturally I'll be a bit disappointed with that, and hopefully I can be more consistent and give myself more chances to win next year.
Q. With your dad as your coach, now do you work together on your game for the courses?
TYRRELL HATTON: I can't carry a yardage book. I'm blind when I stand on every tee. That's what my caddie, Hugo, says to me.
But no, I try not to say much to my dad when he plays. I'll question some of his decision-making for sure but I think, yeah, maybe one of the frustrating things is you watch guys -- for other guys watching their partners make decisions, just, what are you trying to do. Essentially, you're not good enough to try and plot your way around the golf course. Just get it as far down there as you can and get on with it.
Q. A sizable LIV contingent here this week. How pleasing is it to see Westy and others back?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, those guys have had amazing careers. It's good to see them playing this week. Obviously they have not played that much over the last four or five years for various reasons but I think of what they have achieved and the amount of tournaments they have played on the DP World Tour.
Q. Is there any update on LIV 2.0?
TYRRELL HATTON: There's nothing I can add on to that.
Q. Do you feel it needs to come soon?
TYRRELL HATTON: As I said at the British Masters, I've got tournaments on the DP World Tour here for this week, next week, Madrid and then Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi. So I've got enough to get ready for and enough people in the background doing what they need to do and that's all there is to it.
Q. Last week in a normal tournament in a Pro-Am, do you feel there is a difference?
TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I would say I enjoy myself off the golf course. Yes, it has a slightly more relaxed week because of the format and the golf course -- how each course is generally set up. Scoring is generally low, weather dependent. Might be a slightly different week this week this time around because I have my wife and daughter here. In previous years, I might have snuck out for a beer or two and now it's changed to nappies.
Q. You were at Adare a couple weeks ago -- the Ryder Cup points, how much will that impact your decision in 2027?
TYRRELL HATTON: What do you mean? The DP World Tour schedule for next year has only just come out. Since I've joined LIV, I've played a lot more DP World Tour tournaments than a lot of the guys. I've always said I've been committed to keeping my membership here. That doesn't change.
Q. You talked about the short term goals for the Ryder Cup and majors and things like that. With the Open at St Andrews next year, what does it take to win at the Home of Golf compared to any other venue, do you feel, in your experience?
TYRRELL HATTON: Well, you play St Andrews this week. And then you play it in -- during The Open, and they are completely different golf courses. So obviously I've done very well when the tournament is set up like this, this week. My best finish was 15th. I'd obviously love to improve on that for next year.
