Wentworth Golf Club
Quick Quotes
Q. Welcome to Wentworth, how have you found it so far this week?
J.J. SPAUN: It's been wonderful. We love coming here, as far as being in the atmosphere, the English culture, we love it.
Golf-wise, a strange couple days. Overall happy with how I played the last couple days.
Q. You come all this way, do you pop into London and do the sights, or is it just purely golf?
J.J. SPAUN: Just purely golf. Being in this area of London kind of gives us our fix for English culture and enjoying the local things to be had. We just love being in this part of the world, and it's a fun week for my family and I. So a little bit of golf, a little bit of leisure and it's been a fun week so far.
Q. When you go back home to the States, how would you describe Wentworth to friends and family that haven't travelled?
J.J. SPAUN: I would say it's top drawer, is that what you guys say around here? I love it. I think the facilities are great. The club's great. There's three courses here. Everything is top of the line, and that's why it's our Flagship Event on the DP tour and it's been a great start to my initial start here at Wentworth.
Q. That was a really good morning's work, wasn't it?
J.J. SPAUN: It was, 4.30 wake-up call and the birdies were flying and one big bird. I'll take it.
Q. Just for you, being here, it's your first time. What have you made of it?
J.J. SPAUN: I will have it. My family and I actually vacation over here in the wintertime. So any excuse to come to the U.K., and England, especially, we try to make it happen. It's nice the way the schedule worked out for me this fall to be here. This is an event I always wanted to play. I'm glad it worked out and I'm off to a decent start.
Q. You come to the U.K. in the winter for a holiday?
J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, I do. We go to the Cotswolds in mid-December for a couple weeks and just kind of enjoy the English culture. We feel the Christmas spirit a lot when we are over here. It's a lot of fun, just my wife and my two children. We have a good time and hang out at the pubs and relax.
Q. In terms of the golf over here, coming over at this time, this appears to be the way the golf calendar is going to go. So what would your message be to fellow PGA TOUR players about events like this, and could you imagine playing more on this side of the pond at this time of the year?
J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, I think the new structure of the PGA TOUR and schedule moving forward, especially in 2028, this will give us more opportunity, more time, to play events broad. This was kind of like a stepping stone, just to see how it was and if I like it.
I definitely feel like I'm going to plan a little bit more of a global schedule or a European schedule moving forward in the fall time. So it's been lovely so far. The community's great. The spectators and fans are great. The boys on this tour are great. The support's awesome. It's been a brilliant time so far.
Q. You've given yourself a great platform for the weekend. Do you have any little point to prove, given the fact that you will not be part of the American Team in The Presidents Cup?
J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, I think it was disappointing to be left off. I mean, I wasn't really -- I wasn't expecting it to be honest.
But yeah, I wanted to continue to play golf, whether it was going to be here or at the Presidents Cup in Medinah. I always had this circled, if I didn't get in Medinah.
Yeah, I'm here and I'm just doing what I do, play golf, and do the best that I can.
Q. It must have been frustrating, because to anyone at Bethpage, you really took to playing for your country in these kind of team events very well indeed, albeit in an overall defeat, you acquitted yourself really, really well.
J.J. SPAUN: Yeah, I kind of hung my hat on my experience with the Ryder Cup last year. Made it to THE TOUR Championship this year. I won in San Antonio. I kind of did everything I could. I was the odd man out.
Q. So it would be quite sweet if you could really capitalise on this position over the weekend.
J.J. SPAUN: Definitely. That's the goal.
