Max Greyserman

Asheville, North Carolina, USA

The Cliffs at Walnut Cove

Quick Quotes

Q. Max, leader after the morning wave with a 7-under 64. Thanks for joining us. If we can get some comments on your day.

MAX GREYSERMAN: Yeah, played really nice today. I mean, I think I birdied one but made a bogey on two and had to make a 50-yard up and down or so on five or six.

So didn't get off to a great start. Just got it going in the middle of the round and kept the momentum going.

I think it was just patience, kind of waiting for my opportunities. Hit a lot good shots, so just got to keep doing what I'm doing.

Q. Yeah, take us through that stretch of seven through ten, four birdies in a row.

MAX GREYSERMAN: Seven through ten? It's a new course so it's like not every hole I can memorize the hole.

Q. What birdies stand out?

MAX GREYSERMAN: Yeah, I hit it close to tap-in ten. There is couple par-5s in there. I feel like that's the key to this course, is there are four par-5s and we're playing at elevation, so...

They're short par-5s, definitely much shorter than we're used to, so if it you can take advantage of the par-5s -- you going to have probably long iron into each one -- if you can take advantage of those par-5s it opens up the golf course a lot.

So that's what I did. I think two of those holes might have been par-5s, so, yeah.

Q. Not a lot of golf over the last week or two for you.

MAX GREYSERMAN: No.

Q. Take us through the last couple weeks and getting here to Asheville.

MAX GREYSERMAN: I had five weeks off between Wyndham and this week, so I took almost two weeks off on the front end. We have -- our son is eight and a half months, so just spending some time at home with him.

Practiced for a little bit. Went to New Jersey kind of where I'm from to escape the Florida heat for a little bit of practice, and then shut it down again for two weeks.

I went to Italy with my wife on vacation. It was actually our first time without -- both of us without or son I think since he was born, so it was tough being away from him but also great to get a little peace of mind out there.

Had one of my best friend's wedding, and just had a great time the last two weeks. Maybe that's key: Don't practice and just have a good time and just show up here.

Q. What was it like learning a new course and getting to know this course?

MAX GREYSERMAN: Yeah, I would say it's pretty rare for us to play a course for the first time on Tour. Getting to know the course I would say I showed up here Tuesday, yeah, Tuesday afternoon, played nine holes, nine holes in the pro-am, and tee'd off. I would say preparation was short but relied on my caddie on where to hit it.

Off the tee I would say it's pretty much right there in front of you, so it's more so just on and around the greens, learning the breaks and stuff like that.

Q. Does help you not think as much or overthink things I guess?

MAX GREYSERMAN: It's possible. You play a place, I don't know, play a place like Bay Hill or something for a couple years, it's going to beat you up and you're going to remember the bad shots you hit or the water ball that you hit.

So I guess it's maybe more freeing when you play a course for the first time because you don't have any bad memories to pull up. You just have no memories, so it's nice and fresh. I think that's good.

Q. I heard you tell Hayley about your sports psychologist you were working with. Is that something that you think about during the round or just...

MAX GREYSERMAN: Yeah, sometimes. Just a little bit of work with a guy I've been talking with. I would say not necessarily anything new. I've read a few books here and there. We all work on full swing, our putting, our short game, putting, and we all kind of work on our mental game as well.

So nothing new. Just certain things to refresh and certain philosophies. Yeah, you think about it on the course. You're playing a great round and start thinking about where you are on the leaderboard. That's literally meaningless. All that matters is the shot you have in front of you.

So yeah, just kind of reminding myself of that here and there. Focusing on conversation with my caddie instead of why did that putt not go in or why did that shot go here. Because what's past is past and what's future is the future, so just got to stay in the present.

Q. You mentioned the bogey on the second hole. How do you -- you locked in going into the 6th hole where you went birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie.

MAX GREYSERMAN: Yeah.

Q. There is five par-3s out here. Is that kind of anything you dealt with before? From my standpoint it feels weird having five par-3s.

MAX GREYSERMAN: Yeah, it's definitely weird. Four par-5s and five par-3s. I played courses like that before, but I would say it's pretty rare. I would says I've never played a course like that at elevation, so I would have five par-3s where you're kind of -- I think you're hitting long iron into two, three of those.

Plus all the par-5s you're hitting long irons into. So you're kind of wearing out that 5-iron, 4-iron part of the bag.

The bogey on two is going to play as maybe the toughest hole today, one of them. Just missed it in the wrong spot. There is really nothing you could do there, so you got to take the bogey on the chin and move on.

A lot of mid-irons I would say on this golf course. It's basically just mid-irons and wedges. There is no kind of in between.

Q. Thanks. Great round.

MAX GREYSERMAN: Thank you.
