Montclair Golf Club

Quick Quotes

Q. All righty, Hanley, congratulations on another win today.

HANLEY LONG: Thank you.

Q. Cruised through some pretty comfortable victories today.

HANLEY LONG: Yes.

Q. Just talk about your afternoon match. What was working out there for you?

HANLEY LONG: Yeah, no, I was definitely -- the course conditions were much better this afternoon than they were this morning. This morning we were having to deal with the rain, the wind, and all the elements.

Today the sun came out, the wind picked up a little bit, but think it was definitely more favorable from a scoring conditions standpoint.

So honestly, I was hitting the ball really solid. Short game showed up when it needed to. I got a couple putts to fall in some pretty key moments. So overall I think we just kept a really positive attitude given it's a very, very long day.

Q. How important is mindset? How important is positivity when you're going through a marathon week like this?

HANLEY LONG: Yeah, no, it's huge. And as anybody knows, golf is such a game of highs and lows within 18 holes. It's pretty incredible.

So on a day where we're playing match play at a USGA event the emotions are definitely running high, so if you can just stay positive, even if you have some bad breaks or bad swings, I think that definitely differentiates yourself from your competitor.

I definitely had a bad break on nine, bad break on 10, the match ended up at all square and ended up just having a really good positive attitude and knew that I could still execute and get it done.

It turned out in my favor.

Q. When you finished as runner up, how long does that sting last of losing, and how quickly does that flip into, man, I can't wait until I'm back next year?

HANLEY LONG: Yeah, honestly, like last year, I've said before was a really difficult year from a family standpoint, so even making it to the finals last year was such a big blessing.

So obviously I hate losing, but also at the same time, it's like if you would've told me at the beginning of the week that I would be in that position I would take it every single day.

So I think it's all about perspective and looking at the glass half full.

Obviously I love to put myself in contention as many times as I possibly can. I'm 29. The players that are coming up in if the Mid-Am ranks are going to get better and better, so kind of in my mind it's almost like now or never to get the job done.

Now, granted, I'm not trying to put anymore pressure than I already have on myself or maybe their feel from other people.

But, yeah, honestly I'm coming in every match with a good attitude and see what happens.

Q. With your experience what do you think will be the key to getting it done?

HANLEY LONG: Yeah, honestly, like I think I'm just so confident in who I am and what I can do and always just betting on myself. I wouldn't even say it's the experience that is getting me through these matches. I think it's more so of if it's me versus somebody else I'm always going to bet on me.
