Lauren Coughlin

Boston, Massachusetts, USA

TPC Boston

Quick Quotes

Q. All right, here with Lauren Coughlin. Just wrapped up round three in Boston. What were your thoughts on the course today?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah.

Q. What went into your thinking? Anything specific today?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: It really firmed up, the greens especially there towards the end of the round, which is kind of how I was expecting it to play.

Coming into this week it was pretty soft to start the week, but and really started showing its teeth I feel like out there. Yeah, it was a pretty really good day outside of like two holes. Other than that, played really good.

Q. Played with Anna today, too. Got in the field this week from last week. What was it like to play with her?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah, I mean, I feel like we didn't see much. We were going so fast. But, yeah, I mean, I'm just super impressed. When I was 18 years old I don't think I would've broke like 100 out here.

Obviously extremely impressive. Jack, my caddie, has a daughter her age and he was like, yeah, I just can't see her being like this right now. Just super impressive.

Q. Solheim Cup coming up. What is this week like for you in preparation for Solheim?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah, I'm just trying to see where my game is heading into the off week next week and just trying to keep everything going as best I can and be as prepared as I can to get as many points as I can. (Laughing.)

Q. Did it feel different to qualify so early this time, having to kind of win twice to qualify in 2024?

LAUREN COUGHLIN? Yeah, but I kind of locked it up so quickly so I kind of knew probably -- I mean, I feel like I knew no matter what was going to -- like if someone jumped me on points, no one was really going to jump me on world rankings, so I kind of felt like for a while I knew I was going to be on.

Until it's official it's kind of hard to rest on your laurels or anything or feel super comfortable. So I guess in that sense maybe a little bit, it's more just I've not done an a way one just trying to wrapping my head around what I need to get ready for that.

Q. We called and you Schmelly rookies that season. You weren't rookies really on paper, but you were Solheim Cup rookies. Can you explain the thought process that goes into being an older rookie in a Solheim Cup?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah, I feel like Lindy is a good example this year. Like on paper she's a rookie but she's been through so much in her career to get to where she is that -- I mean, again, on paper she hasn't, but she has gone through so many things to get to where she is, so many hard times and rough times and had to battle and grind.

So I think in that sense she's not a rookie whatsoever, but still, it's your first one and there is still going to be a little bit of nerves. I had them all week. But I'm hoping everyone can have as much fun as we possibly can and see where we end up afterwards.

Q. How do you use a week like this to pressure test your game I guess and basically give yourself an opportunity to shore up the little details before you head to Bernardus?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah, like I said, just kind of see where everything is, and on the off week try to fix anything that I might need to work on. I've gone and seen the course so I know what I need to focus on, so make sure I'm driving it well is probably going to be the biggest thing and short game around the greens.

Other than that, yeah, just kind of try to rest up and be ready for a long week.

Q. One last question, technical question. I feel like you're a golf nerd sometimes. Talk about the 18th green and playing in that valley, choosing whether to use a wedge or hybrid or wood or something like that. What goes into it? Do you have a preference either way?

LAUREN COUGHLIN: Yeah, I think it's a personal preference, but like me personally, I would never a want to -- I don't ever really want to go be for that green unless I have like probably want at most 4-hybrid going -- like just because anywhere left of the green you're kind of dead. The green goes away from you and you have to try to get something up, and it's just so difficult.

And I think you can -- kind of have seen it I'm sure, like anybody who has gone has probably done -- just getting it on the green is a success, whereas like I could probably get it closer laying back and giving myself a good wedge.

But like 12 is a good example. You can kind of hit it over there on the left side, and I did today and I was a little bit in the rough, like pin high. I only had like -- it was like three paces on and I hit like a little pitching wedge just to get it running up just because there is no way to stop it otherwise. Or it's too soft and severe on the slope to hit a 58. It's going to hit and stop. You have to get something kind of running.

I'm more like a pitching wedge or 9-iron. I've never really liked the putting -- just me personally, I've never really liked the with putting a wood. Some people really like that over chipping.
