Ryann O'Toole

Boston, Massachusetts, USA

TPC Boston

Quick Quotes

Q. Okay, here with Ryann O'Toole after the second round. Really fought today to stay within the cut line. What was the mindset going into today?

RYANN O'TOOLE: You know, there has been a few weeks this year that I just felt like I got off to a hard start, and coming into the second day I just can't get it going early enough.

I felt like in Portland two weeks ago, same thing: Didn't have a good first round and waited too long to start going on the birdie train.

So I was like trying to get that mindset that I had towards the end of that to start the round. I also used it coming down the stretch last night to get from 5- to 3-over, so I think it helped.

Stayed patient. It's nice to be looking at the weekend not looking at flights.

Q. And you're expecting to last time we talked I believe at the Scottish you were waiting to pop. Obviously there was more layers at that time. How you feeling now?

RYANN O'TOOLE: I definitely have popped. I have to say like Portland on I felt like I started just popping. I was walking down the fairway going these are too tight. I need the next size. Pulling them away, like oh, my God.

So definitely have popped. I feel it. I feel it in the golf swing, I feel it just when I'm looking at yardages going I don't have that in me anymore.

But taking it as it comes.

Q. And has it made you approach the game different recently?

RYANN O'TOOLE: I've definitely had to learn a little different -- I mean, some different shots, different ways to look at things, especially here. The rough is thick. I don't have that extra gear that I usually do.

So looking at shot in the rough like, oh, I can just swing this hard and get after it and get it out there somewhere. It's like, no, this will just hook on me. There is not that extra gear from the top.

So I've had to learn that.

I've had to learn to accept looking at things differently. Something that usually looks like a 7-iron is now 6-iron, you know, all the way down.

So I'm accepting the yardages and just making the most of it.

Q. And is that something you've been self-aware of or you heard from other folks about, hey, you can expect this?

RYANN O'TOOLE: I had a feeling. I didn't know how fast it would come. I did not know from talking to other people. It was more just something you start seeing pretty quickly.

I just think with everything going on and growing in the stomach that those muscles that control so much power and rotation are stretched and that's why you just don't have the coil effect.

So it's a little bit different timing. It's, yeah, just accepting the smoother -- there is no, let's go hard at this to get a couple more yards out of it. It's, let's just make good contact.

Q. Ryann, I know I think you've talked about it a little bit at this point, being 39, almost 40, this was a pretty big choice for you to make. What message do you hope to send to women maybe in your shoes and situation thinking about having kids a little bit later in their 30s, and what would you tell them?

RYANN O'TOOLE: There is two things: I would say for anybody, whether you're gay or straight, look at having your eggs frozen. Look at that, because this career flies by. You keep saying, oh, I'll do it next year. I'll do it next year. I remember my mom saying, you should freeze your eggs, you should freeze your eggs, and I waited until 37 to do it.

And I got lucky at least. But I don't think everybody can -- is going to have that, and you may find out oh, dang, I didn't get as many eggs as I wanted.

You know, women's bodies are crazy. With the amount of stress we put on our body, just to be able to say, hey, look, go freeze junior eggs in your late 20s. Have them. That way you're not stressed and worried.

So often you'll find yourself -- there are so many girls you'll find yourself, I'm not even with somebody; I'm 36; I want to have kids, but you're life just didn't transpire that way.

Also it's hard to step way from this game or it's hard go, okay, wait, time out, I am going to go have a kid and come back.

That would be one thing.

And the next is if you do take care of your body, you can last out here, you know, and keep playing. Who knows what the future holds for me. Taking it day by day as far as when the baby comes, see what I want to do.

Q. How validating does it feel to shoot a round like this having to deal with so much that a lot of people wouldn't expect or think about being pregnant and trying to play out here?

RYANN O'TOOLE: It is. Because you get the text from my parents like prior to the tournament starting, like, how you feeling? I'm like, pregnant. Tired.

But then even like after the round they're like, you know, you held on. I am like, so frustrating though. I hit shots and I'm like what the was that. That is not normal.

So you just -- I'm just taking it as it comes, but I've really had to humble myself really had to go, you know what? This is just part of the process. Try to enjoy it for what it is and what I have left out here for this season.

Q. How do you take today and build on this going forward?

RYANN O'TOOLE: Just show that if I get out of my own way and I just allow myself to settle in and not press and to not try to do something that I can't physically do at this point, that I can get it around any golf course.
