Press Conference
N. BARTUNKOVA/B. Andreescu
7-5, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Bianca, tough result, tough opponent as well. Can you talk about your thoughts on this match and playing in front of that crowd.
BIANCA ANDREESCU: I mean, I did have some time to reflect a little bit. There are definitely a lot of positives.
I mean, stepping out on the court, I've had the opportunity to do this many times, it just sucks that obviously I couldn't, I guess, figure it out today, because getting a win at home is always the goal.
But, yeah, it's tough, but again so many positives. I think in many moments my game was there, but yeah, it was just too on and off, I would say, more off than on, let's say.
THE MODERATOR: Questions?
Q. You're up 5-2 in the first set, 40-Love, just wondering how you sort of process that, and what happened from your perspective?
BIANCA ANDREESCU: I wish I knew. I wish I had the answers. I was trying to dissect it after the match, but, I mean, she started swinging a little bit more, started putting more balls in the court.
But even at that 40-Love point, like those three points after, I mean, I had my opportunities. I think that was the theme of the match, I was building the point up quite well, but I just wasn't taking those opportunities. Like even on some short balls too, I felt like I wasn't timing it right. Maybe it was the wind a little bit, but, yeah, I really wish I knew.
Q. You talked about it, but just your desire to win here and just the feeling of not being able to get it done today.
BIANCA ANDREESCU: Yeah, I don't know, sometimes it's tough. Like, I get so many opportunities with wildcards, and I obviously want to do really well, yes, here, but also any opportunity I get a wildcard.
It's tough. I feel like maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but I feel like I'm letting, you know, my team down, my family down sometimes, the supporters.
Yeah, like it's, there's a lot that goes into it, and I'm very much an over thinker, but that's what I'm working on. I mean, that's why I do so much meditation and all that stuff. Sometimes it just gets the best of you, and today it definitely did.
But again, there's so many great moments too, it's just how do I find that consistency when there are a lot of heightened emotions, let's say.
Even though I felt like I was pretty calm and collected throughout the match, I think subconsciously there are also a lot of thoughts that might pop in, like doubts, for instance. But again, you try to just acknowledge it and let it go.
I guess the one thing that did help me is the crowd in many moments today, and just hearing a bunch of kids too cheer for me. I mean, yeah, those moments are everything to me.
And to even step out on court, yeah, I didn't get the win, just having that opportunity again is amazing.
Q. Curious, you were here a couple days ago and you were talking about finding your identity on court again. I know it's been an ever-evolving process with you, with different coaches. What exactly is the identity that you think you have now, and how has that evolved over the last few years?
BIANCA ANDREESCU: Yeah, I think the last few years there was just a lot of confusion when I would step on the court.
Now, when I talk about identity, it's like I know what I'm doing, I know the plays that I want to execute, and the attitude that I want to convey.
It's a work in progress. That's tennis, that's life in general, right. If I give my best effort, which I think I did today, even in the tough moments, that's all that matters. Hopefully, with results things will click.
Q. I know you're playing doubles with Kayla this week as well. I know you were even in the photo pit at one point watching her play. What has it been like for you to watch her rise in the last few months, and why did you choose to play doubles again together at this event?
BIANCA ANDREESCU: Yeah, I think she's a great player, and above all an amazing person.
I got to really know her during the BJK Cup, and we played really well together, so I said, Why not, we already have some experience playing together, and she's also Canadian.
But I would love for this to be like a continuous thing. I do want to start playing more doubles now that I'm healthy and more fit, I would say.
So, yeah, I think it will help my game too. I do want to play with somebody that I enjoy playing with, and I do enjoy playing with her.
