Linda Noskova

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: We'll go ahead and get started. Linda, welcome back to Canada. Obviously you've had an amazing victory at Wimbledon within the last month. How does it feel kind of coming back to the tour and starting off on a new surface and just resetting?

LINDA NOSKOVA: I was very excited to come back. Obviously the last couple of weeks have been nothing more but crazy and chaos, so I'm glad I can kind of start over. It's a new week, new tournament, new surface, it's all the changes at the same time, so I'll have to get used to it as fast as possible. But, yeah, it's a new opportunity for me to work on my tennis and get better.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Curious how you find adjusting from grass court to hard court. Great success on grass, do you feel like your game is well suited to make that transition to the hard courts?

LINDA NOSKOVA: I've always loved hard courts and it has always been the kind of surface for me until I changed it to grass court. But for me it's kind of getting easier and easier these transitions going from a surface to a different surface. I hope to get used to all the different conditions, different balls, different speed on the court and everything, the weather is kind of tricky as well. It's all those things together, but it's part of our tournament, so it's what I have to do.

Q. You mentioned it's been a little crazy and chaotic since winning Wimbledon. Can you give some specifics about how life has been since becoming a Wimbledon and a Grand Slam champion?

LINDA NOSKOVA: Well, I did do a lot of things that I had to do, media-wise, especially in Czech Republic. There was a lot of just running around doing the media. But for me I definitely had to find some time to kind of find my vacation as well. I did spend a few days in Italy, which was nice. I did see my family. So it was kind of a mix of all the crazy things with all the chill things.

Q. The tennis schedule is so busy, do you find you've had enough time to enjoy that moment and enjoy that success, or is it so quick to get back to the next tournament, the next practice session, etcetera?

LINDA NOSKOVA: Yeah, I've thought about it and I need to realize it as soon as possible. It's something that I have always worked for, that I have played my tennis my whole life for. It did take me a couple of days, not a couple, I would say like a week, maybe 10 days, to actually realize it. Maybe I will not realize it a hundred percent, you know, it's always just one of those big things that actually happen and you're not, you know, preparing yourself for that, it's kind of like a big shocker. But you have to restart and keep going, it's not the end of the world.

Q. Before the third set of your Wimbledon final you went to the dressing room, walked by the trophies, and said you're not going home with the small one. How important is it to find motivation in anything over such a long WTA season?

LINDA NOSKOVA: The motivation can get lost sometimes, absolutely. It's a long year, we're playing for 11 months in a row. It's not easy to keep your focus 100 percent all the time, especially after, you know, big wins or big losses. It's one of those things that you really have to work on, which is also part of the tennis career. So if you cannot get back into the game for the next week, for the next tournament, it's trouble. But for me I feel like I have always been kind of good at that naturally. I didn't really have to practice it or work for it and spend some extra hours on it. But, yeah, it's always kind of easy for me to do that.

Q. Speaking of the trophy, you get a replica trophy at Wimbledon for winning. I'm wondering if you found a special place to keep that. I'm guessing you didn't bring it with you here to Toronto.

LINDA NOSKOVA: No (laughing). I love my trophy, but I've had enough of it for some time now. It's in my living room, yeah, it's on the display. I'm looking at it whenever I can, so it's there.

Q. When you were growing up, who were the players that you looked up to that you remember watching at Wimbledon that you wanted to one day be like?

LINDA NOSKOVA: I remember especially at Wimbledon it was Petra Kvitova. It was much easier for me to watch a Czech player than anyone else. She has always been a big role model for anyone in Czech Republic, for all the young and small kids starting with tennis or playing tennis. She has been very accessible for me, and just to see her win it two times, actually then play her as well, it has always been kind of unreal to have these experiences.

Q. You mentioned resetting after such a big win, winning Wimbledon. Curious what that process is for you to reset, and how challenging is it going from the highs of that accomplishment to then coming back and trying to compete, new city, new tournament, new surface.

LINDA NOSKOVA: I had to tell myself that, like I said, it is not the end of the world. My career is not ending here, it is hopefully only starting. Winning a Grand Slam is, you know, an unreal thing. But at the same time, I'm still 21, I feel like since I accomplished this so soon, I feel like it's even a bigger motivation for me to keep going.
