Q. Well played, Shannon. Tell us about your round today and the conditions.
SHANNON TAN: Thank you. And, yeah, I think today the first maybe six, seven holes were pretty good condition, like not much wind, and then the wind picked up as expected.
Yeah, I would say today was pretty decent. I knew with the wind it's going to be tough, and I think just mentally today I grinded it out. Missed a few fairways and a few greens, which is always going to happen when it's tough.
But then just telling myself I'm going to make up and down here and just focus on the next shot.
Q. You had a great start. What did you hit at the first and how long was the putt there?
SHANNON TAN: 7-iron into the first and hit like a two-footer for birdie, so that was a great start, yeah.
Q. And you had trouble at No. 8.
SHANNON TAN: Yes.
Q. What happened there?
SHANNON TAN: I hit a shank. It was straight off the hosel and the first time I've done it, too. Yeah, straight of the hosel is -- I didn't know what happened and I think I was quite shocked for a bit.
Yeah, I mean, the next shot all I can do is try and make contact with the ball and just try and get it out on short grass.
But, yeah, I think double from where I was -- I would take it. It's a par basically from where I was from there.
Yeah, and then from then on I just kind of was like, right, reset, and, yeah, did pretty decent.
Really just one bad shot today and tried my best to recover. Yeah, that was pretty much the best I could do from where that shot ended up because it was -- I had to hit through like a really small gap in the trees.
I didn't want to be short off the pin because then you leave yourself that downwind uphill chip, so I was like, just go a bit long and try to leave yourself an easier chip, yeah.
Q. Obviously feeling very comfortable now playing in the big tournaments, the majors. Do you feel you're ready to contend?
SHANNON TAN: Yeah, definitely. I think I've played in a few majors now and seen how my game compared to everyone else, and I think my game is up there. I just think of course more experience and learning more about like what to do in different scenarios like on the course.
I think with that, it has helped as well. Looking at my results in majors I've pretty much improved after every start in a major. So yeah, it's definitely trending the right way. Just trying to keep finding like little bits and pieces in my game to work on.
Q. Are there specific things that you're working on with your game trying to improve?
SHANNON TAN: Putting. I think that's the main thing. And then just trying to make more birdies. I mean, I hit a lot greens usually, like average 14, 15 greens. So just trying to convert more off those chances and try and of course limit the bogeys as well.
I think one of my focus I think would be to like -- I think putting is the main thing and it will help a lot. Like to try and limit the mistakes and make more birdies as well.
Q. Can I just ask you a little bit about Singapore and how often do you go back there? Are you still in touch with a lot of people there?
SHANNON TAN: Yeah, I am maybe home like 12 weeks a whole year, so not much. I'm on the road a lot. I see my coach in Australia sometimes as well in the offseason, so I'm not home that much. I do miss home. My parents and friends are all home.
But I think that makes me realise when I'm home I try and make more good use of my time and like try and spend time with them. Yeah, when you're on the road all you can do is just call them and stuff.
But, yeah, I'm not home too often but I do miss home sometimes.
Q. When you think back, are you surprised how quickly you reached the level you have? You were playing amateur golf, what, three years ago, four years ago?
SHANNON TAN: Yeah, well, this is my third year on Tour, so I think -- well, I mean, first of all I went to Q-School just to get experience and see what Q-School was like. I got my card, so that was a surprise. And then won my first event on the LET, so that was a surprise as well.
So I think -- well, I think one of the things that helped me do this, I just go in and focus on myself and just see what I can do and do my best and the results will come.
But I would say probably not really expected like the results. I'm not really a big result -- I look at things quite small, like small goals, little things in my game instead of big picture.
In some ways, yeah, it's trending quite quick, but at the same time I think it's from the work I've put in.
Q. And have you set goals for yourself in the next year, next two years?
SHANNON TAN: Yeah, so, I mean, I want to try and get that putting stats better. I'm decent like 10 to 15 feet, but inside six feet, that needs to get better. Lag putting has got a lot better this year as well, so I think that's been pretty good.
Yeah, mostly inside six to eight feet needs to get better so that's one of my goals.
Q. Shannon, there are 174 bunkers around this venue. You're known obviously for your accuracy off the tee. How many bunkers did you find today, and how comfortable are you in the pot bunkers?
SHANNON TAN: Honestly, I found a few bunkers, two or three bunkers today. Got up and down in one of them and then I was up against the lip on the back of the bunker, so I had like one foot out trying to hit and I was like, I'll just try and get this out.
But I think with the pot bunkers it's a high lip and sometimes you can get -- depends on the bounces you can get as well. You can be right up against the lip or a lot of different scenarios that you can't control.
But, yeah, I think I found like two or three bunkers today. I think it's definitely different from a normal bunker where I think pot bunkers are like deep, and if you go in one you just have to try and get it out and not be too aggressive sometimes.
Q. I've got to ask about Georgia Hall. We know you're her biggest fan, and this venue is one I imagine you've seen a lot on TV and watched her win in 2018. How is it now coming back to a place you watched a lot and how is it seeing Georgia here and her face around the venue?
SHANNON TAN: Yeah, I mean, this event and venue is quite special to me. I look up to Georgia and this is where she won the British Open in 2018.
Yeah, when I got here on the Sunday I was like, oh, wow, like I can't believe I'm here. I played the practise round with her on Sunday as well. Played the back nine with her.
And like I pretty much like was talking to her about the shots that she hit, because I know she birdied 1, 4, 6, 15, and 16. But, yeah, just talking about the round.
Yeah, she's always been really nice to me. Always asking if I want to play a practise round with her. Playing a practise round with her here especially has been really special.
