THE MODERATOR: Welcome Bryson DeChambeau, captain of Crushers GC. Well-played at 8-under 64, currently solo second. Please take us through your round and how you felt out there. Got off to a fast start and looked like you continued it throughout the round.

BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, I played great today. Birdied the first three holes. Almost got it to 4-under through three the first three holes and then made a couple bogeys out there, 16 and 4, which were kind of frustrating to me because I felt like I hit good shots on those holes. Just didn't get rewarded and got into some funky places.

All in all, though, I played great. I had an unbelievable eagle on 6, great birdie on 8, great birdie on 12, 13, 14, 15. I played well today.

Seeing Lucas up there, it's pretty impressive what he's doing right now, and it will be a good battle hopefully this weekend. But for now, I was proud of the way I fought out there.

Q. You mentioned Lucas. When you see him out there going so low right out of the gate, how do you balance wanting to keep your foot on the gas with also just staying focused on your match with the course, especially on day one?

BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, you see him moving forward and I looked up on 14 and I'm like, 10-under, oh, my gosh, all right, I've got to birdie every hole. I kind of switched my mentality towards going for it a little bit and being a little bit more aggressive.

Sometimes when you see that lead moving away from you, you're just, okay, just free up and let yourself go. That's what I was able to do. Luckily made a couple birdies but unfortunately made a mistake on 16. Great shot in on 17. Actually hit a better shot in on 18 than I thought. It just flew a little far and a little left, and the wind pumped it. It got windy in the afternoon. It unfortunately didn't go as close as I thought I could hit it.

It definitely fuels it for sure.

Q. You've spoken a number of times about aiming to try and get back to that Greenbrier 58 form. At certain points today you were going on a string of birdies. Do you feel at all that today or recently you're approaching that?

BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, I would say I feel like I'm getting close to that place, if not a stable place around it, close to it. Just more of the same, and I'm going to go work on a couple things with my game and try and get even more comfortable and keep playing great golf.

Q. This is our third year back at JCB. There have been a number of updates to the course over the past few years. Just interested in your assessment of the venue, the upgrades they've made and how it's playing.

BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, this golf course is in fabulous shape. The greens are in great shape. The closely-mown areas are in great shape. Everything about it is really in solid shape. It's fun to play a golf course that's taken that well care of. It's hats off to the JCB team and all of them for working as hard as they have because they have a great track and venue out here.

Look, there's a couple holes that are quite interesting and difficult and a bit of a different challenge, and I think that's what makes it unique. If you take all the uniqueness away from it, it doesn't then become its own thing, right? It becomes what everybody else wants it to be.

I think when somebody is trying to design something unique and different, they're going to get some stuff that's a little out of the box. It's playable. Every hole is playable. You can make birdies on every hole. You've just got to hit good shots sometimes. I really enjoy the test and the challenge, and it's going to be a fun three days.

Q. Bryson, we're coming down to the wire on the individual championship. Obviously you're chasing Jon Rahm. You basically need to prevent him from winning this week. Are you cognizant of that? How much are you thinking about the overall season title?

BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, I'm coming out here to win this event this week. I'm coming out here to play the best I can. If he goes and beats me, hats off. I can't control that.

But I am aware of it. Ultimately I'm just trying to enjoy the next three days and play golf the way I know how to play golf.

If I can play golf the way I know how to play golf, I think I'll be right up there next to the top.

Q. Now that you're a few days removed from last week and maybe you've had some time to process, what are your takeaways from Birkdale? It was quite the fight back after some adversity.

BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, I made the cut. No, it was a good fight. I wish I would have given it more on Saturday and Sunday. Felt like I could have. Besides the 5th hole and being 3-over on that hole and then the 11th hole, that's six shots. That's tied for the lead right there. That's two holes and I'm right there with the Claret Jug.

Q. You mentioned a good battle with Lucas. Tomorrow you'll be in the final group. Do you kind of feel like that's a week late?

BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Like it's a week late? Look, golf is golf, right? I wish we could have gone to battle last week. It wasn't that way. But life goes on.

There's moments of adversity in everybody's life, and I was passionate about what I believed and thought was right. For me, it's now in a place that it is what it is, and you keep moving through it. You keep moving past it.

For me, I'm excited with Lucas tomorrow. That'll be great. But there's three more days. We're here to win this tournament this week. The Crushers are, and I am, as well. Individually and for the team.

But yeah, could you say it's that? Sure. But it didn't happen.

Q. You obviously have plenty of experience producing double-digit rounds under par. Lucas had one today. What goes through the mind when you know that you've got it going on so well that it's almost unstoppable?

BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yeah, you feel almost invincible on the golf course. You feel like everything is going to go right. I'm going to make every putt. It's that internal battle that you have with yourself, and Lucas isn't afraid to go low. He's done it before. I think that's what's cool is you've got a guy that's not afraid to go low.

That's good for LIV. It's good for the competitive nature of this sport. You want to have those sorts of individuals that can do that.

But when it comes down to it, it's more of the same of, all right, it's now a new hole, a new shot, a new opportunity to make a birdie or a par or a bogey. So you've got to focus with your mindset on just making a bunch of birdies.

So when you get into that mindset, it's more of I'm going to birdie every hole, and you just keep looking at how do I make birdie, how do I make birdie. That's really the only question you ask yourself when you get it that low.

Q. Did you see 11-under out there today?

BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU: Yes and no. It's a great score. When I got through the 8th hole, I was thinking there could be a deep score for sure. I didn't know it was going to be 11-under by somebody else. I thought I could do it and I didn't. But I still played a great round of golf.

Yeah, I could see it. I could see it if you're playing really good out there.
