Q. Is it fun to come up here? Is it an honor to come to media days?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: It's great to come here. I've had a great experience so far. I appreciate all the questions I've gotten. Thankful to be here.

Q. Obviously at the top of your list are team goals. What individual goals do you want to meet and get better at so that those team goals are met?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: The ultimate goal is to win. Obviously that's number one, regardless of what the individual goal is. But to win is definitely that goal.

Q. I know communication is a big part of playing in any defense, especially with Coach White, but how can you maybe kind of quantify that and explain how important it is to be able to communicate on the field with your teammates and for the guys on your defense that you think are among the best at communicating?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Yeah, communication is absolutely what you have to have on defense. Some of the best communicators would probably be Judge Collier, Gerald Kilgore, David Bucey. So that actually -- the way you get there is by practicing. You have to practice communication. You're not just going to get it day one.

Q. Coach Beamer mentioned earlier how much you've earned the opportunity to be here today. What did it mean to you to be able to come here today?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Great question. It means a lot to me. It means the world. I've been here five years. A guy from Texas. And to be able to come here and represent the University of South Carolina and how it's been a blessing to me and my family, it's amazing.

Q. As you said, you've been at South Carolina for five years. Earlier Coach said you're the longest player on the team. What does that mean to you, and why did you choose to stay at South Carolina for your whole collegiate experience?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: The environment here at South Carolina is amazing. It's a family. As I said, I'm from Texas. I didn't get homesick once because I feel like every day coming into the building, I was excited. It was a family.

Just having the coaches and Coach Beamer as the head coach and Coach Gray as his coach, and my teammates, is really great.

Q. You're standing in the tunnel on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium. You're looking out at all those crazy Gamecock fans going nuts. Still get goosebumps?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Yes, I do. Every Saturday I get goosebumps. The environment in South Carolina is amazing, it's amazing. You're not going to beat it.

Q. You were named the defensive player of the spring this past spring, how do you live up to that expectation this fall?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Continuing to go to work, staying green, every day being intentional, and have a purpose every day.

Q. What's Caleb Herring meant to you as an addition to that defense coming over from Tennessee?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Great question. I love Caleb Herring. He came in a little quiet at first. But he started opening up. Now he's like a brother to me.

I talk to him every day. I joke around with him every day. And he holds me accountable. I hold him accountable. He's a great hard worker too.

Q. Georgia got added to your schedule. How are you feeling looking to that game?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Still taking it one game at a time. When that week comes up, that week will come up. But I am excited.

Q. What in your first year as a starter last year, what is something that you feel like you can take away from that that you're building on, that you're able to build on this spring, winning defensive player in the spring?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: I'd say probably communication, making sure everybody's on the same accord, and as a defense, making sure everybody's one.

Q. Who are some of the guys on the team that haven't maybe played a lot in the past that you think are going to be kind of coming forward and asserting themselves as guys who are playing more this fall?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: I feel like we have quite a bit of guys who are coming in and working every day and who are going to surprise a lot of people.

Q. You're from Texas and there's a lot of huge college rivalries there. There aren't too many state legislatures that passed a law that said you and those guys upstate have to play every year. Can you explain what it was like when you got to South Carolina, that rivalry?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Yeah, it was a good rivalry. It was definitely a grind, too.

Q. The talent in this conference is unmatched compared to some of the other ones, people would say. Which offense do you think is going to give you guys the biggest challenge this season?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: We're going to take it one week at a time. We respect all of our opponents, so we're not going to say this offense is gonna be harder than this offense. So we respect all of our opponents and take it one week at a time.

Q. You talk about how hard it is to communicate on defense. Nobody thinks about, when you guys are playing at home, all that noise is being made, it's got to affect you guys. You're down to hand signals. You're down to gestures. How hard is it to communicate when those crowds are going nuts?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: I wouldn't say that affects us. I think it definitely affects the offense. To us, we embrace it. Like, we love it. It definitely gives us an edge. So we expect that and we actually practice that, the loudness, just making sure we're poised and under control.

Q. Do you have a player that you look up to or try and model your game after?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Yeah, Jessie Bates. I know that Jessie Bates is a great football player. So I do kind of look up to him, watch his game and kind of see how he plays.

Q. J'Zavien mentioned last week how much of a leader you have become and how helpful you've been with him. How important was that for you this season, being that that's such an important position there this season? And then also with J'Zavien, what have you seen from him so far?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: He's been great. He came in, he definitely didn't come in as a freshman. He came in like he's been in college before. He's one of the first ones in conditioning to finish. He's always grinding. Never had a problem with him off the field. So he's been great.

Q. What's the identity of this year's defense going to be for the Gamecocks?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Our identity, we're hard workers with a chip on our shoulder.

Q. I know you said you're taking it one game at a time, week by week, but which city or stadium are you most excited to play in, not just the team, but just the place?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Williams-Brice. Definitely Williams-Brice. Can't wait to get back in there.

Q. Unless you've talked to someone who's played football, it's hard to explain what culture really is. What's culture for South Carolina?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Love. Love is our culture. We actually are big on our culture. So we have love, gratitude, and we're a family.

Q. You were able to start all last season. Was that a point of pride for you for the first time in your career?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Yes. I do have that pride. Especially as a starter in the Gamecock secondary, as I know -- it's no little deal. So I use that as pride, take it with pride.

Q. Having guys like Justin Okoronkwo, Fred Johnson, Shawn Murphy back at that second level being experienced, how key is that for this defense and you guys at safety?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Yeah, it's definitely key. This will be their second year and Fred's third year in this defense. So it's huge being able to play faster and communicate a lot better.

Q. What's it like when you're back deep at safety and you've got Nyck Harbor running whatever deep route, how -- I don't know if scary might be the right way to ask it -- but what's going through your mind when you see him coming full speed and knowing he's going to keep just going?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: Yeah, you gotta know your personnel. I'm definitely excited to see Nyck play this year.

Q. I want to pick up a little bit on his. The way the college game as expanded, sideline to sideline, spread offense, you're out there on an island pretty much every time. How important is it to have basically convenient Alzheimer's and forget the last play and go to the next one?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: It's super important. You know, the last play doesn't matter because it's over. So you've got to stay focused and next-down mentality.

Q. Growing up playing football, high school, did you always know that you wanted to play in the SEC, or was it just wherever your best opportunity would be?

PEYTON WILLIAMS: I knew the SEC was the best conference in college football, so that was always the ultimate goal.
