Quick Quotes
Q. What are your thoughts on today's round?
SUNGJAE IM: The wind wasn't too strong today, so I didn't have much trouble with my tee shots or second shots. I had visualized the course plan and memorized my tee shots and layups beforehand. Sticking to my routine worked out really well. I didn’t force anything, and whenever I had a chance, my putts dropped. I’m happy to finish at 4-under with five birdies and a single bogey.
Q. This is your sixth appearance at The Open, and it seems like the first time the weather has been this great. Your first-round score is also your best yet. Do you feel this course suits your game?
SUNGJAE IM: I've had a good feeling about this course since the practice rounds. Honestly, I'd say it’s the tightest Open course I’ve ever played. On some holes, you are forced to lay up with other clubs instead of hitting the driver, mostly because of where the bunkers are positioned. Since the club choices are basically set for you, it actually removes the risk and makes things feel much more comfortable. As long as you keep the ball on the fairway, the course doesn't play too difficult. That aspect really suits my style.
Q. How are you adapting to the heat wave in Western Europe?
SUNGJAE IM: I actually find it much easier to swing when it's warm or hot. The current weather is absolutely perfect for me.
Q. How do you usually unwind and recharge?
SUNGJAE IM: When I'm resting, I usually just watch K-dramas or YouTube videos to clear my head. But right now, we are heading into the final stretch of the season. This is the time to stay locked in, so I am focusing all of my energy on golf.
