THE 154TH OPEN

July 16, 2026

Tyrrell Hatton

Southport, Merseyside, England, UK

Mixed Zone

Q. Bit of a random first question, but it looked like the ball was like in a footprint on the 13th hole when you hit it. How do you hit a shot like that? You hit a great one considering.

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, I was surprised that I got it pretty much around the green. I was worried about it.

I thought more realistically I was probably going to fat it because it was on such a -- it was in a heel print. I was worried about carrying the bunker that was like 50 yards ahead of me.

Yeah, somehow managed to get ball first. I knew, if I did get ball first, it was going to come out low. I was more worried about the people that stood there to be honest. I didn't want to hit anyone. Obviously got lucky it ended up just on the edge of the green.

Q. What kind of adjustment -- you've probably never hit a shot quite like that before or that situation before. What kind of adjustment did you make, way back on the back foot or something?

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, pretty much. Just put the ball in the back of your stance and just hit down on it and hope for the best that you do get ball first.

Q. Play time was 5 hours 35 or so.

TYRRELL HATTON: Yeah, it felt slow.

Q. Is there a way to fix that?

TYRRELL HATTON: I don't know. To be honest, with the conditions we played in today were perfect, weren't they? So in that sense, I don't know if the golf course can -- I don't want to say play any easier. It's still challenging out there. But can you imagine if we had bad weather? It would be even longer.

I don't know how the pace of play gets better. It's obviously a big field. The par-5s were reachable.

Q. Is it hard to keep concentration on when it's that slow?

TYRRELL HATTON: You only need to concentrate when you get to your ball, don't you? There's a lot more downtime.

Our group, we were pretty chatty today, I think. There was times when you just have a good chat before you have to start focusing on the next shot.

Q. How did you feel about your round as a whole?

TYRRELL HATTON: I would say I'm pretty disappointed with my round. Obviously my only dropped shot was on 18. I feel like I got away with some pretty loose tee shots at times. Yeah, I'm disappointed by that.

I didn't feel like -- when I did have a makable birdie putt, I obviously don't feel like I really holed them, and that was disappointing because I feel like I putted really well last week.

So, yeah, there's a lot of things that could be better for me, but we'll try again tomorrow.

Q. Does Bryson doing this well on a links course surprise you?

TYRRELL HATTON: No, it shouldn't surprise anyone. He's an amazing player.

Q. I think it does surprise people for whatever reason. That's why I asked.

TYRRELL HATTON: No, he flights the ball great. His ball flight today was really good. He didn't really hit many bad shots.

As I said, he's an amazing player, and it shouldn't really surprise anyone that he's doing well.
