Press Conference
THE MODERATOR: How are you feeling going into the championships this year?
CAMERON NORRIE: Feeling good, healthy, which is important. I think I would like to have a few more matches under my belt. I think, as always, I'm always coming in this tournament with being a little bit of the underdog. I like that. But most importantly feeling good, feeling the ball well, and healthy.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. I wanted to ask about the 'tache?
CAMERON NORRIE: Not as thick as your one (smiling).
No, there's no real story behind it. Yeah, just shaved, wanted to grow a little bit, not going like full clean shave everywhere, but yeah...
Q. Would it be a superstition where you'll keep it if you're winning?
CAMERON NORRIE: Absolutely. For sure. Why not (smiling)?
Q. Could you talk a little bit about recovery methods after matches. Has the technology changed in order to recover?
CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, I think I'm typically a player that I really rate my engine and I rate my ability to recover.
But I think it's just more learning about yourself, learning if you need more risk. How you prepare is a little bit different. Always on top of all the major things with sleep, with food, with hydration, all those things are always on top of that.
Yeah, we're using all the latest technologies as always with the recovery. I think for me the major ones, the sleep and nutrition are the most important for me.
Q. Do you feel you're over the rib thing you had in Paris?
CAMERON NORRIE: Yep, I'm done with that. I'm feeling better. I felt it a little bit at the beginning when I was first hitting on the grass, but nothing since then, which is really positive.
Yeah, feeling the body really good.
Q. You said you like coming in as the underdog. What about that mentality do you enjoy as a player?
CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, I don't really do it on purpose. I would like to have done better at Queen's and gone deeper there. I never planned to play in Eastbourne. I always feel going into Wimbledon that I really need to push and really need to get back on track where I was.
I've had, like, the whole week to kind of get ready. Had some matches in Hurlingham, which was fantastic. The preparation's been really good. The weather's put it on for me. I really like it when the grass is like this and it's warm and hot.
Yeah, it's always nice to be the underdog going into whatever match you play. Such a special tournament. I always feel good going into this tournament.
Yeah, like I said, it will be nice to have some more matches. I'm feeling prepared. Hit so many balls this week, last week.
Yeah, looking forward to it.
Q. What is your emotion like on the Sunday night when it's the day before it starts? Does it still feel the same as your first one?
CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, I don't think I was feeling the same. For sure it's that special feeling, thinking about it. Even practicing today on the match courts, you're just feeling so special and so lucky to be playing on those courts.
I think it's nice to be healthy. It's easy to take that for granted. Another Wimbledon... You would kill to be playing in this tournament when I was younger. You need to put it into perspective. Yeah, you have another opportunity to go at the tournament.
Yeah, I'm going to be feeling for sure the nerves, as always, but I don't know why I'm always quite relaxed when the tournament starts. I'm going to give it another crack.
Q. Do you think maybe with that underdog status, everyone loves an underdog, maybe more support for these two weeks?
CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, for sure. I think it's nice to be able to use the crowd to your advantage. Yeah, there's a lot of Brits in the draw this year, which is so good. Everyone's playing well leading into the grass.
I think I've got my best tennis to come still. Yeah, I'm going to just go use the crowd where I can. I think the biggest thing is playing point for point. Regardless if I'm playing unreal, playing shocking tennis, keep going, keep pushing. I feel like over the last maybe 10 slams I've been very difficult to beat.
Obviously not including French Open where I had to retire, but the other ones I've been tough to beat. I want to use that to where I can. Yeah, I'm ready to go.
Q. I wondered whether you considered getting involved in this media blackout thing? You're doing a lot of interviews as British No. 1. Was it on your radar?
CAMERON NORRIE: Yeah, I've been doing a lot of media, which is good fun. I'm enjoying a lot of it.
With the blackout thing, for me, I'm more just focused on my tennis and everything. I think Wimbledon's done such a good job to improve the facilities, the new gym that's looking so, so good. That area, the space has been utilized really well.
Yeah, I think everyone wants more money in whatever they do. Think it's a 20% increase from last year, which is absolutely huge. So I think when you put it into perspective, I'm pretty happy and pretty lucky to be here playing for that.
I think Wimbledon, especially, they take such good care of the players. You feel so special being in the tournament and playing.
Yeah, I haven't really focused too much on any of the other stuff, like some of the other players. I'm just focused on trying to get myself ready and prepared for round one. I'm hungry. I want to keep going.
