THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

June 29, 2026

Max Basing

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

S. MOCHIZUKI/M. Basing

6-3, 6-0, 6-0

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. Max, obviously a tough result. You got through qualifying last week. How does it feel, I guess, playing your first Wimbledon?

MAX BASING: Yeah, it was a surreal feeling. Was super happy to get out there and give it a chance. Probably not how I wanted it to go.

But also I think looking back at the start of last week, I definitely would have taken the position I'm in. So trying to see the positive in that way.

Q. Obviously you lost in pre-quallies, so how does it feel kind of, yeah, what would you have said to yourself back then had you found out you were going to play main draw Wimbledon?

MAX BASING: Yeah, I think to have a second chance after losing in prequalifying, to keep going, and a lot of stuff went my way last week. Played some really good tennis. Maybe didn't quite feel like that happened today, but also hats off to my opponent, who I thought played a really solid match and was the better player on the day, I think.

Yeah, now it's a tricky result for me, but obviously a lot of lessons to take. That's the benefit of coming all the way through from prequalifying. I played a lot of matches. So there is a lot of different results that I can reflect on and take learnings from that and then take that into the future.

So it's definitely been a step in the right direction, at least.

Q. Tennis-wise, you said you played well, what do you think was the main difference?

MAX BASING: I think he matched up well against me. He used his weapons well. Maybe I wasn't so smart at times with how I was trying to utilize my weapons. But ultimately I just think the match ran away from me.

At this level, as I found out today, some points here and there can really go against you, and then the match runs away.

Yeah, it's just a level that I have got used to over the last week or so, but today showed that probably just need some more matches at that level to properly adjust and learn more.

Q. How much does today and the whole process, going all the way through leading to today, change for you going forward?

MAX BASING: Yeah, I think just taking as many learnings as I can and taking the positives out of it and trying to keep the confidence I gained from last week, and being out on such a big stage for myself today, and take that confidence into the tournaments to come.

I think I'm proud of myself for how far I got. I would have loved to have put up a bit more of a fight today and gone a little further, but you can't always get the result you want. And it's not a loss in my head; it's more just a learning.

Q. Walking out on that stage, what's the feeling when you do that?

MAX BASING: It was a really nice feeling. I think at the end of today, once I have kind of processed the loss a bit more and think about the experience I have had, I think just seeing family, friends, my team out there, and home crowd supporting me, I mean, that was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, at least for today, and something I'll use as motivation to try and make happen again in years to come.

Q. You mentioned family and friends. Who did you have here and how many?

MAX BASING: I had a good few people. I went to university in the States, so I had some friends and a coach from there come over. I had my whole family: mum, dad, brother and sister. And then, I don't know, probably 20 or so family friends and friends who were able to come out, and a lot of other people.

But I could hear their support all the way through. Even when the match wasn't going my way, they were still cheering. So that was nice to see, at least.
