Wimbledon, London, UK
Press Conference
A. RINDERKNECH/O. Tarvet
7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5
THE MODERATOR: Just give us your thoughts on the match today. I know it was a tough one for you.
OLIVER TARVET: Yeah, obviously was, you know, a difficult one to swallow. I mean, I had some chances, put myself into, like, in positions where I have very good opportunities. I felt like it's the way that tennis goes. Especially against really high players like Arthur, you only get a couple of opportunities, and if you don't take them, then you usually pay the price.
You know, credit to Arthur. He served unbelievably well throughout the whole match, and especially in big moments, as well, he came up with some really good shots and some really good shots I feel like when I feel like I made an opportunity for myself.
So, yeah, obviously a little bit disappointed I couldn't take a few more opportunities, but I felt like I'm proud of myself the way that I went out there and I felt like I showed kind of, you know, at least the crowd on Court 12 what I was capable of, the improvements that I have made from this time last year, you know, in my game.
I feel like mentally, from a mental standpoint, I was pretty much spot on, you know, from the first point till the last. I feel like for me that's something I pride myself in quite a lot in making sure that emotionally and from at least what's in my control, I put my best foot forward and from, as I say, first point till the last, make sure my presence is known and make my opponent's life as difficult as possible.
I feel like I did that today against an incredibly good tennis player, you know, very well-established tennis player, who obviously last year beat Zverev. So I feel like even though it's a difficult loss to take, I feel like I'm taking a lot of confidence from it, just like I did last year, in knowing that I'm in the right path. If I keep on working, keep on putting my head down, then, you know, hopefully those matches might go my way.
THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. Obviously you had quite a difficult fall. You bounced back from it really well. How was that to navigate?
OLIVER TARVET: Yeah, obviously it wasn't ideal the way that I was playing, you know, kind of as you said, in the fall last year. I feel like I set incorrect expectations for myself or too high expectations for myself and maybe thought that things were going to happen by themselves.
Obviously I feel like I'm a guy who likes to just to take the one lesson. I feel like I won't let history repeat itself from that standpoint and I'll learn my lessons from last year.
But, yeah. Sorry, can you repeat your question again?
Q. I meant more like the fall on court.
OLIVER TARVET: Ahh.
Q. Sorry, the American fall.
OLIVER TARVET: The American fall.
The fall on court. Yeah, obviously was a bit of a shock. It was nothing serious. Obviously I was able to play, you know, like, the rest of the third and fourth set, you know. But yeah, I feel like I was slipping quite a lot.
I don't know why, I felt like me and Arthur, especially on one point, we ended up on the floor in the same point.
So, yeah, obviously wasn't ideal. You know, went to the bathroom, my head was absolutely spinning. I felt like it was a bit of a shock. I felt quite nauseous. My thumb was really painful at that point. But luckily, I saw the doctor, saw the physio, took some medication, and after a few minutes, you know, after a little bit of me throwing up as well, I felt better.
I felt like I regrouped well and was able to play the third and the fourth set to a really good level.
Q. Obviously coming through qualifying again, it probably is tough right after the match, but you still did an amazing job to get to this point. How do you sort of reflect on that experience?
OLIVER TARVET: Yeah, you know, again, I felt like I have played my best tennis last year in Wimbledon. I felt like I have done the same thing this year, as well. You know, I felt like again qualifying, especially two times in a row, is not an easy, easy task.
I felt like, you know, saying I feel like if you do something once, you can have a good run and a good break. But I feel if you do something back to back, it means that you have that level, you know, against guys who are top 250. Yeah, it gives me a lot of confidence, as I said.
I feel like last year I got a lot of confidence as well, and this year just reinforced that, that I'm able to compete with guys not only top 250 of quallies but also today I feel like I was competitive from the first point to the last against a guy who is top 30, is an incredibly established player, especially on a grass court as well.
Yeah, I felt like Wimbledon as a Brit is a very special tournament, and I'm just happy that this year again I was able to produce my best level.
