Press Conference
M. ANDREEVA/M. Linette
7-5, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Good match today. Happy to have won, I'm sure.
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, I'm super happy to get the first win in London. First match is always tricky. Especially, you know, she's a very tricky opponent. It's the first time we played against each other on grass. Just super happy to get the win today.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. Obviously you're coming in as the most recent Grand Slam champion. How satisfied are you to get past the first round?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, I mean, of course it's just always super special to get past the first round on a Grand Slam because you always have that extra pressure. For me, I was also thinking that it would be very important for myself to just kind of prove myself that even if I did well on a last Grand Slam, that I can still continue to try and do well.
Of course, I knew the match would be tough because we always have tough battles against each other. As I said, I'm just super happy to get the win today. I just felt like obviously I could play better at some points, but a win is a win. I'm just happy with the win.
Q. Do you know who you're playing next?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah.
Q. Some players don't like to know.
MIRRA ANDREEVA: It's okay.
Q. You're playing Barbora. What are your thoughts on playing her?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Well, I think the last time we've played against each other - when was it? A long time ago. 2024? I don't remember. Well, it was a long time ago.
Obviously, I mean, she's a two-time Grand Slam champion. She's very experienced. She's playing well on grass. So for sure it's not going to be an easy match for me.
We'll see how it's going to go. I'll ask Conchita to prepare the match. We're just going to talk and come up with a good game plan.
Q. I've been asking players about tournaments leading up to a Grand Slam, if they like to play the week before, two weeks before. What is your preference? Why do you find it beneficial if you were to play the week before or opt out?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Before I would say that I preferred to have a tournament two weeks before, so to play a tournament, then a week of practice, then a Grand Slam.
After Paris, I was supposed to play Berlin. After, I just felt like I really needed a little bit more time to calm down and get back to practice. You just have to practice a lot before starting the grass season. I just felt like I really needed more time to recover and to practice and to get ready.
Now I feel like this year, I've only played - what - a week before a Grand Slam I played Adelaide, I played Bad Homburg, before Paris I had a couple of days before it started.
I don't know, it kind of depends on the schedule, depends on what we talk about. It always changes. We talk with the team and we decide what's better to do.
Q. After your victory at Roland Garros, you wore a special jacket which is mentioned 'thanks to myself'. Is this jacket going to be sold?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: I don't know. I don't know if it's going to be on sale. For now I'm the only one to have this jacket, which is also pretty special.
I have no details. I cannot tell you.
Q. On your match today, Magda can be a tricky opponent. What about her game makes her difficult to play?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Well, I feel like she's one of those players that tries to put extra ball back in the court, which is obviously not easy. Here on grass, I felt like she was coming to the net more often than she usually does. Her serve also was a little bit trickier to return.
I feel like she's kind of a player that transfers from defense to offense pretty quick. So as I said, we've played couple of times against each other before, so I kind of knew what to expect. Also, at the same time we've never played against each other on grass.
I also at the same time didn't know how she would play. So yeah, the match was tough. I mean, 7-5, 7-5, almost two hours. Happy that I was able to manage and play more consistent towards the end.
Q. When Serena was in here yesterday, she was talking about the players she watched while she was away from the sport. She mentioned you. Are you going to be watching her match tomorrow?
MIRRA ANDREEVA: Yeah, I mean, I've actually watched a little bit of her press conference yesterday evening. But I guess I didn't get to that moment when she was talking about that.
I mean, they've asked me about that on the on-court interview. I said that it's just very special to hear those words from a legend in sport. Obviously it's very special to me.
I will be watching her match tomorrow because I'm very curious to see how she plays, just to see her play again for a very long time that she wasn't playing. That would be an exciting match I think. I will be watching, yes.
