THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 1, 2026

Jenson Brooksby

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

J. BROOKSBY/I. Buse

6-2, 6-2, 6-3

THE MODERATOR: Jenson, nice win for you this afternoon. Talk us through the match today.

JENSON BROOKSBY: Yeah, I thought it was one of my strongest performances in a long while. I think start to finish, from the very first game, you know, I focused on what I needed to in my game really well. And I did a good job of not giving him any true openings I think to come back after I started strong. That was a big key today.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. How long has it been since you feel like you played that well?

JENSON BROOKSBY: Yeah, I mean, maybe since around the Dubai tournament or possibly the best of the whole year, as well, for me, which, you know, I'm very excited to be able to do at one of the biggest events of the year.

And just to find my groove again of what's working for me, I'm real happy with that right now.

Q. Is this sort of a pivotal moment, turning point for you?

JENSON BROOKSBY: I mean, I don't think there is ever, like, one moment that I say is pivotal, but it definitely could be I think a turning point, and having some more consistent play, I think that's possible, yeah, consistent results, yeah.

Q. Do you know why it's happening on grass?

JENSON BROOKSBY: I mean, even from year one of playing on the grass in 2021, I just feel like grass has best suited my game, my game has been best suited for the surface.

I'm never surprised to feel like I can play my best tennis on the grass. Even especially at Wimbledon, for whatever reason, I've always, each of the three times I have been here, I think my game just suits these courts really, really well. I just like my level right now.

Q. You may be playing Sinner next round. What's it mean playing Sinner next round? Do you remember the last time you played him in 2021?

JENSON BROOKSBY: When I played Sinner?

Q. Yeah.

JENSON BROOKSBY: Yeah, assuming he wins. I think we've both changed as players a lot since that match, so I definitely wouldn't take too much from that match.

But, you know, just treat it like any other match. Obviously it would be a big moment and a tough challenge, but, you know, just go do my homework like I have the last couple guys, and then just be physically, mentally ready for battle again (smiling).

Q. For an American audience who might be learning your story for the first time and seeing this win and seeing your progress here at Wimbledon, what would you say makes you most proud about your journey to this point?

JENSON BROOKSBY: Just as a whole?

Q. Yeah.

JENSON BROOKSBY: I mean, I think I'd say I've had a lot more things to overcome than the average player on tour, for sure. So I think just my ability to be able to come back and keep consistently being in these moments when myself or anyone else would think I'm down and out.

I think a lot of other people in my position would have been down and out. But my resilience to always come back and find a way to keep being in these moments I think is the biggest part to my story.

Q. Were there points when you felt personally down and out?

JENSON BROOKSBY: Yeah, especially when I was out with the wrist injuries, for sure. At the moment, it was hard not to feel any other way. But, you know, I think time can pass eventually.

But I have had plenty of moments like that in the past.

Q. Third round with probably Sinner, a little more context. I mean, he's the biggest challenge probably out there in the men's game. He's defending champion here. It feels like a really big sort of moment, opportunity, and challenge for any player.

JENSON BROOKSBY: Yeah, it would probably be one of the couple toughest challenges right now in tennis, just for how he's consistently, like you said, been winning slams or big events.

But I think I'm always someone who loves that challenge and, you know, it's obviously one of the toughest challenges in tennis. But I never doubt my ability to be able to beat someone.

There is nothing more I love than being able to be on these big show courts in big matches as it goes further in the slams. I'm just excited and grateful for the opportunity and just hope to keep it going.

Q. Can you talk how you have developed not only as a person but as a player since 2021 when you won the Newcomer Award.

JENSON BROOKSBY: Yeah, it's been a lot of ups and downs since that time, for sure. I think the biggest thing in terms of my game has always been trying to keep improving on what my strengths are but also adapt to how the game is now than five years ago, because it's definitely, you know, tennis is faster now. You know, the balls are slower. There's things that are different than when I first was on tour.

So just trying to adapt my game based on to how the tennis is played now, along with working on my, you know, things I wasn't as good at but also not losing sight of my strengths. There's definitely been some ups and downs with that, but, you know, I think my best tennis of my career is still to come in the coming years, and I think especially the last month I've been in a better rhythm with what I'm working on.

Q. You talked about the change in game there. Has it been key to keep your own identity as a player, despite that?

JENSON BROOKSBY: Yeah, I've gone through a couple of periods where that was a little higher or lower at certain moments. I know for myself, like, as the core of me, I always have to focus on my strengths a high amount and be able to play to what I think my strengths are, and that comes, you know, every day not losing sight of that, whether it's a training week or a match day, just throughout the entire year I've learned that.

Q. You've probably mentioned this, explained it before in interviews, but you've had eight successive defeats between Miami and Queen's. Was that to do with the clay or fitness problems with your wrist or anything else?

JENSON BROOKSBY: No, there was multiple factors. No physical factors. I've been healthy every week this year. But, I mean, obviously the Europe red clay has been my toughest surface consistently so far in my career, so that was definitely a part of it.

And also, I just think the last few weeks I've, you know, I think I found just a few better cues and what works in my game and helps me play to my highest potential, at least for right now, compared to before. You know, you can always go back and forth with, like, you're trying to improve but keep what you have.

It's going to go in waves, for sure. Always knew, once I came to grass season, I think I can have my best results here.
