THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 1, 2026

Jannik Sinner

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

J. SINNER/N. Borges

7-6, 7-6, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Jannik, straight-sets win. You must be pleased with today's performance.

JANNIK SINNER: Yes. Tough match. I think was first time we faced each other, or after a little while. I don't remember. But it was a tough match. Both were serving very well the first couple of sets.

So yes, I'm happy to be through in three sets.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Last time you talked about return of serve being an area you needed to focus on. Today was a big serving performance from both of you. Did you see improvements?

JANNIK SINNER: Today is tough to say because he was serving very well, very precise first couple of sets. Was serving for the second set. Struggled a bit there. It's also normal when you serve out for a set or a match. There's a little bit more tension.

Overall I tried to stay a little bit more aggressive. At times it worked well; at times I feel like there's a little bit to improve.

Second match on grass, I was not looking for perfection. I tried to improve. Felt like at times I did. Now we'll see how it goes.

Q. There's a heat wave coming next week. People saying it could be 31 degrees. Are you worried about that? Might it actually help your game because the balls fly faster through the air?

JANNIK SINNER: Yes, as you said, it's second week. There's still a long way to go, then we see.

Q. In terms of your recovery from the first match, how were you feeling physically today? Did you have any issues? How are you feeling physically overall?

JANNIK SINNER: For sure when you have a fall like this, woke up the next day, it was not perfect. We recovered very well. On court today I felt good. So no issues at all. The foot was really good.

So yeah, I feel all okay. Thank you.

Q. You talked about some areas for improvement. What are the areas you're looking to improve on?

JANNIK SINNER: Trying to go a little bit more to the net. Trying to be a bit more aggressive. Also the movement itself I can improve I feel like on grass.

Yeah, also, again, the return of serve, especially second serves, trying to be a little bit more aggressive, then we see how it goes. I feel like all shots I can do slightly better.

But again, it was today a better performance I liked than in the first match.

Q. Was your forehand not as good as it could be?

JANNIK SINNER: No, it's not.

Q. (No microphone.)

JANNIK SINNER: Let's see.

Q. You normally have a tournament on grass before you come into Wimbledon. How different does it feel this year coming straight to the grass at Wimbledon?

JANNIK SINNER: It's nothing different. First time that I do it on grass.

If I see the matches also in Halle, the first couple of matches in the past years, they were very, very tough. So it's normal.

I feel like the grass here, it is a little bit different than anywhere else you play. Very similar to Queen's, though.

Yeah, something we will take in consideration maybe for the next year. But this is a conversation we're going to have after the tournament.

Again, the first couple of matches, I know that they are always tough. Now I'm past them. Let's see what's coming on the next round.

Of course, there are no easy matches. It's always very tough, very unpredictable, especially playing here on grass. So let's see.

Q. You will be playing Jenson Brooksby in your next round. Your thoughts on him? Haven't played him since Washington, DC 2021.

JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, long time. Long time. But I saw his match today a little bit before mine. He was playing very, very good. It's going to be a very different match than today. But I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be a very tough match. I'm looking forward to it.

Kind of a new player, because after five years, more or less, that we haven't played. He has improved a lot. I'm also a different player than five years ago. Then we see how it goes.

But I'm happy to face him.

Q. How important was that second set today? Looked like Nuno was going to take it. How crucial was it to get it done in straight sets?

JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, was important. Even if you lose, it's still a long match. Many things can happen. It's just that the dynamic can change in the third set if you go up two sets to love.

That's what happened. I broke him very early. Was a lack of concentration again in the third set. But tried to bounce back straightaway, which I've done.

It's more the consequence maybe for the sets after. It was important, yes, but if not we are even in sets. But still, I take it.

Q. Do you prefer a tougher start or an easy start?

JANNIK SINNER: We're going to see. I don't know. For sure for the first match on grass, having a tough opener, then getting through, it was good, was important.

Today I managed the first couple of sets very well in tricky moments. I know that I can, or hopefully I can play a little bit better at times I know.

Hopefully comes match by match, then we see.
