THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 2, 2026

Jan Choinski

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

F. TIAFOE/J. Choinski

4-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2

THE MODERATOR: Jan, tough opponent out there. Didn't go your way today. Give us your thoughts on the match.

JAN CHOINSKI: Yeah, I thought it was a good match, good intensity, especially I managed to win the first set. I think I was feeling good on court.

The court felt a little bit different to the courts that I had played leading up, practicing, and also which I played my first match on.

But overall, yeah, good match.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. The end of the third set, the decisive sort of 11th game when you got broken, seemed the sun was getting into your eyeline.

JAN CHOINSKI: Yeah, I mean, it's always for both, right? But I just felt over the course of the third set and also like fourth set, especially at the beginning until the sun really settled lower, for me it was impossible to see a ball, especially on the deuce side. I was literally just looking at a black box. The sun was so low and right across in my eyes.

It was impossible to play a rally, it felt to me. But obviously it's the same for both so... Can't do much about it.

Q. How special was it playing on such a big court in front of the British crowd at Wimbledon?

JAN CHOINSKI: For sure it was a fun experience. Yeah, I felt like the crowd was great. It was a fun game. I enjoyed myself out there.

So yeah, for sure, good experience.

Q. Any learnings from this week? What do you think you could take from this?

JAN CHOINSKI: I mean, I feel like I can play close matches against anyone, to be honest. So that's something. I mean, I felt like I knew before because I'm starting to play really good tennis. It just shows.

Even though two sets of the match were fairly, from the score, kind of easy to him, but I had my chances in the third set. I think I had break points, as well, to go a break up, which I couldn't convert.

You never know what would happen. But for sure, yeah, that's a learning.

Q. You've obviously recently reached a career-high ranking. The result wasn't what you wanted today, but you've had a successful first half of the season. How would you sum up this past six months?

JAN CHOINSKI: Yeah, for sure at the beginning, I would have wished for maybe an even better start into the year. Although over the past couple of weeks or months I think I've been playing great tennis day in, day out, and had some really successful tournaments.

So I just hope I can build on this and play a great summer.

Q. Looking ahead to the US Open, are you hoping you can keep that ranking high so you can get in automatically, I'm guessing?

JAN CHOINSKI: Yeah, I mean, that's a goal, for sure. Everybody dreams of playing main draw slams, because quallies of slams is tough. I mean, depends who you get in main draws. You could play players maybe the same or better level in quallies, to be honest. The level is very, very close.

Also, nearly everyone in quallies can play great tennis. So getting the ranking up there and being able to participate in the main draw of a slam straightaway, yeah.

First of all, financially it makes a big difference. Then also, you know, depends who you get in the draw, you've got chances. It's not like because you're 100 you can't go deep in the slam, for example. It's not the case.

Depending on the draw, I feel like it's even possible to play third, maybe fourth round. It takes a huge step off you having to qualify for a slam, being able to play main draw straightaway.

Q. Jumping way ahead, this time next year hopefully you're back here. Struggling with the sun, what's the solution? Sunglasses, go to Wimbledon and see if you can?

JAN CHOINSKI: I really don't know. I think for him, what helped him as well, he was struggling with the sun as well a little bit, I feel like. Yeah, he was serving well from that side, as well. Like, he had a couple of easy points here and there that saved him maybe because, especially in that one game where I had break points, he was on that side, as well. I could feel he was a little bit uncomfortable in the rally, as well. He made a couple of easy mistakes.

Yeah, I mean, I don't know if sunglasses would help, to be honest.
