Press Conference
K. MUCHOVA/N. Osaka
7-6, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Karolina, great victory for you. You must be feeling great right now.
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: Yeah, tough battle. I'm feeling good. I'm happy I won today.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. You served incredibly well through the whole match. How much easier does that make life for you when you're serving at that level?
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: I actually think, I mean, I got broken twice from the start of the match. I think I needed to get kind of used to the court, the arena. It's kind of close, which I didn't experience it here yet, because I came pretty late for this tournament so I didn't practice on those big courts.
But once I got kind of used to it, sight way, yeah, I felt pretty comfortable. It definitely helps a lot when I have a good day and I'm serving well. In the tough moments or game points, I can just rely on the serve, or serve plus one.
Q. What part of the strategy of today worked good, because it's so fast and so close to the lines? What did she complicate you, from your point of view?
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: I think she played really good. I think she was hitting the ball really hard, as you mentioned, to the lines. I just tried to, as well, match the speed and, as well, when I had the opportunity, to just play a bit harder. Then once she would shorten the ball, I just tried to maybe go for the slice or go to net to change it up a little bit.
That was kind of the way I tried to play today.
Q. You've beaten Grand Slam champions back to back now. Do you feel like you're playing the best grass court tennis of your career?
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: Well, I didn't play that much of a grass court tennis in the past. This is my best result so far. So I'd say result-wise, definitely.
Q. Feel like playing-wise, though, form-wise?
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: Yeah, I think this year I played in Berlin, then Bad Homburg, I played two tournaments before Wimbledon. I think it helped me to get the matches and get that experience from the matches.
I think I feel the most comfortable definitely on the grass now.
Q. In an earlier press conference you mentioned that you could speak for minutes about your work with Sven. As Dutch television, we'd like you to do so.
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: You know, it's like every press conference, they ask me about him. It's not that I'm tired about saying how nice he is.
Yeah, again, he is a good person, which is very important for me. A nice guy. A lot of experience. I think we clicked on the tennis court and, like, that we can call it in Czech that we're on the same wave, like the same connection tennis-wise.
It's just nice to have someone who, as well, gives you a bit more confidence, is positive, and all that.
Good?
Q. Yes.
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: (Laughter.)
Q. Who gets most of the credit, other than you, for your style of play, how it developed? Did you ever play differently or was it the natural way for you to play?
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: I've never played differently. Very natural for me to play this way. Since I was a kid, I played like this. It's tough to say.
Definitely my two coaches when I was a kid or I was, I don't know, around 10 years old, that I was practicing with them in my hometown, which was Jana Novotna and Sylvia Stefkova, they definitely were supporting me in that style, tried to make it better and better. They wouldn't tell me like, No, this isn't going to work.
We were work on my slice and all that, even though when I was a kid it wasn't working that much. So I would give credit to them.
Then yeah, all the coaches that I picked in the past and that I worked with, just the key was to try to develop this kind of game. So I would say most of them, most of my coaches, I would give them big credit.
Q. Your record against Coco was very one-sided, and then you won the most recent match. What challenges does she provide specifically for you? What is it like trying to play her?
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: Well, she is just, like, great athlete overall. One of the best in the world, in our sport. It was tough to play against her. I'm happy we have 0-0 on the grass. That's a bit better balance for me there.
Yeah, I mean, she gives you a lot of balls back. She has a lot of weapons. She is big fighter, which as well gives a lot of, yeah, things to her game to make it awkward for me.
Q. Obviously there's been a lot made of the fact you haven't had such good results at Wimbledon the last couple years. How much of that is the fact you came in injured? You came in straight off wrist surgery two years ago. Last year you were struggling to hit topspin backhands. How much is it feeling fitter this time?
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: Yeah, I'm appreciating definitely more the time that I'm here, that I can play, that I don't have these big issues that I had in the past. I'm also happy that I now am like selling my game, I would say, and that I can use it.
I'm healthy, which I don't like to say...
Q. Touch wood.
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: Yeah, touch wood exactly (smiling).
I would say I'm more appreciative and enjoying the moment that I'm here, I can play, all that.
Q. Fact checked something. I was once told you had an allergy to grass?
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: Yeah, yeah. I'm allergic.
Q. How do you manage that?
KAROLINA MUCHOVA: I have pills, a lot of pills. Pills, sprays, eyedrops (smiling).
