GUO-MLADENOVIC/Dabrowski-Stefani
6-3, 7-5
THE MODERATOR: Welcome to the press conference for Wimbledon ladies doubles champions, Guo Hanyu and Kristina Mladenovic.
Your first Wimbledon title together. How does that feel? Give us your thoughts on the match today.
GUO HANYU: Well, until now, I still feel it's like unreal. It's, like, really dream come true. I'm still I think enjoying with Kiki the rest of moments here.
KRISTINA MLADENOVIC: Yeah, it also feels like a dream. I've never won women's doubles here before. I played the final 12 years ago, if I'm not mistaken. It was my first one. To get the title here with Hanyu, so grateful for her.
I enjoyed the whole journey, but from the beginning of the season, the very first moment we played together, we won the tournament in Auckland.
Yeah, I'm just feeling super lucky, proud of us. Yeah, just means a lot to get the title with Hanyu. I feel like we have a really special connection from the beginning. To make history with her, it's pretty special.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. You mentioned how you came together at the beginning of the year. How did you become a pair? Why do you think it's been so effective this quickly?
KRISTINA MLADENOVIC: How we became a pair? Pretty easy: I asked her to play with me (smiling), she kindly accepted.
She finished her season last year top 30, top 20 in the world. I was coming back from injury. I had no ranking. I was talking with my coach. I loved how she was playing. I mean, I love how she's playing. I saw her from the very beginning.
I said to my coach, I want to play with this girl. I was lucky she accepted. Then from that moment, it was just super nice to get to know each other, because we didn't know each other from before.
Yeah, I feel like Hanyu is a beautiful person. I just enjoy being around her, even when we are not practicing or playing a match. We also have nice moments together off the court.
I think that's really important. I feel like I always try to have someone by my side that I like to be with as a person and also, I think, of course, our games and level, they really matching. I think we have same vision of how we want to play.
We have great weapons, but we also, I feel like we are thinking how to play and we love tactics about doubles. We try to listen to our coach and execute the game plans.
I think we are really striving and really good at that together.
Q. Hanyu, I think this is your first Grand Slam title. Did you think it would happen this year?
GUO HANYU: Be honest, I didn't think about this at all. But I made a wish when I just arrive here first day. I saw the picture on the wall from last year. I was like, Wow, this trophy is so beautiful, I want it also.
I just said it, but I didn't really think about it. Now we just really hold the trophy. So really it's like a dream for me.
Q. Talking about the match today, they're a very good pair, won a couple titles this year. How did you approach the match from a tactical standpoint? How did you stay composed in the close second set?
KRISTINA MLADENOVIC: Oh, well, I think we arrived on the match very ready. We have to give credit to our coach, Luka. I mean, our plan was very clear and simple. I'm not going to say what it was, but, I mean, I think we showed there today that we were really clutch from the baseline, we were hitting big groundstrokes.
Their weapons is serve, they're serving good. It's on grass, so it's probably difficult for everyone honestly to return them. But this is where I feel like we were better today. We were really clutch in important moments to get the break on their serve. I think that's what made the big difference second set, but also, throughout the match, we really put them under pressure on their service games.
Q. Kristina, if you were to win the US Open, you would win the career doubles slam. How much is that a thought on your mind?
KRISTINA MLADENOVIC: I mean, of course it's somewhere in the back of my mind. When you are so privileged to live this moment, you always kind of trying to chase history, right?
I've always felt great in New York. Unfortunately not winning the biggest title, but I've been three times runner-up. Even though I'm not champion there yet, I always had a great feeling.
It's not like the last Grand Slam that is missing that I never felt good there. So, of course, I mean, I can say I'm back in the game and I'm healthy. My first goal is to stay healthy, to keep improving. We just started playing with Hanyu. We are so excited we're having really great results.
Of course we going to stay motivated to try to chase more great results and trophies. I'm sure it's also on Hanyu's mind. We are playing for these moments. It's a dream come true to win Wimbledon for the first time. I was very emotional, of course.
Of course, we're going to try our best to have a great run in New York, that is the next Grand Slam in the season.
