Quick Quotes
Q. Here with Maria at the Amundi Evian Championship. Really a tale of two days for you. What were some of the key differences from the first round to the second round?
MARIA JOSE MARIN: I think the round yesterday didn't reflect what my game was coming from a tournament, and I knew my game was in a good place. Just yesterday didn't reflect it. I had some mistakes that you just cannot do on this course.
Yeah, after the round yesterday I just went out to the range and tidy up what those mistakes were and tried to clean out my short game, which I think it's really key. You get it out of position here, and, yeah, I had a little bit of pressure this morning because I knew I had to do a good round. I knew I had to do under par because the cut was going to be around even, 1-over.
I just stayed pretty patient. Starting the stretch with 10, 11, 12, 13, those are not easy holes to start with. I had a bogey over there, but I just told myself, okay, just calm. These are hard holes. There are some easier ones coming.
Yeah, just took advantage of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 for me. Yeah, just kept pushing hard until the end.
Q. Was going to say, to go from your back, the front, to start off the back nine like that, what was really working for you then?
MARIA JOSE MARIN: I think something clicked once I made a really good par save on 17. I was on the woods and just chipped it out and did a great up and down. Every since that I felt real comfortable with my putter, which I think it's like the key here because you can hit really good shots but sometimes making putts here can be hard.
Yeah, golf start to be automatic. Those stretch from 1 to 5 when everything was perfect, the distances I had, the club in less than ten seconds, so when you're playing golf like that it's really fun.
Yeah, I think something that I missed yesterday was having fun, remembering that I'm in a major championship and nobody gets this opportunity.
Q. How long did it maybe take you to get used to this golf course? I know there is a lot of tricks and hills and getting distracted by the views. How long did is it take to you get used to this course?
MARIA JOSE MARIN: I think getting used to it and you get more comfortable with the course, but you never end up knowing all of it. There is just some new places or new breaks, new putts that you find out every time.
I think it's just the more you play it the more you get to know it and the more you're comfortable to go at pins sometimes. I think that's what happened today. So I saw some pin positions that I had last year so I knew I could go for it or I knew I had to be pretty careful with them.
Q. Had an opportunity this week to secure at least your 17th, now an opportunity to secure an 18th LEAP point for you. You said earlier you needed to go low today. How much was that a motivation for you?
MARIA JOSE MARIN: It was a motivator. Playing professional golf when I went to college was not in my plans, my main goal. Now that I'm doing so good of course it has come to the table, and I'm really close to getting my card.
Yeah, just that motivator that you're going to get to play in the Tour and you're going to do what little me always dreamed of.
Q. What do you take away from the first two rounds heading into the weekend? I know you said your goal was to go low today. What's the goal for the rest of the week?
MARIA JOSE MARIN: Just play steady golf. If I get it out of position, just don't force things. Get it back. If you do bogey, it's fine. They're going to show up in the scores. It's more the normal.
Yeah, just trust whatever you're doing. Don't second doubt it. That's win the things that killed me yesterday. Have fun. Just have fun for the rest of the two days because I get to play the weekend.
