Q. Battle on the front side, battled back on the back. Obviously didn't want to drop that last one there. You'll be top 10 coming into Sunday's championship round. How are you feeling?
TOMMY GAINEY: Well, besides the last hole -- I hit a couple loose shots today. The greens really blew my mind today. They were a little bit slower than I expected. We had that little shore, 10- or 15-minute shower early on before I teed off at 8:39.
I've got to say, it really affected me today because my speed was not as good as it normally is. I missed quite a few short putts today. I didn't hit it as great off the tee, but I made a few really good saves out of the bunkers on the back side, and on the front side made a couple good saves.
I've just got to hit it better. The golf course is hard. It's a U.S. Open for crying out loud. You've just got to keep it in the fairways and get it on the greens and try to make some putts. I just haven't done it enough today, and I paid the price for it on the last hole.
Q. Walk us through that last hole. Was it the drive?
TOMMY GAINEY: Oh, yeah, the drive. You can call it a shank. You can call it a bad swing. Whatever you want to call it, it's bad. It was right and not coming back.
I bet I hit it 50 yards right of the fairway, and I don't know if it hit a tree or what, but it was not very good. I was right behind a tree, so I had to pitch out. Then hit a poor shot after that in the bunker, and it's a good thing that bunker game is pretty sharp because I gave it a workout today.
