TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP

June 25, 2026

Matt Fitzpatrick

Cromwell, Connecticut, USA

TPC River Highlands

Quick Quotes

Q. Nice little 64 today. If we can get some comments on your round.

MATT FITZPATRICK: Yeah, played really solid. Took advantage of the scoring holes there. Just felt like I kind of did, well pretty much everything really, really solid today. So overall just a really good day.

Q. Your fifth Travelers, you shot 63 in the third round last year, you're starting to finish this place out. What is the key here?

MATT FITZPATRICK: I think you got to give yourself a lot of opportunities and I felt like I did that today. If your approach play is good this week there's obviously a lot of birdies to be made. You're not hitting too much club in on a lot of holes. So I think if you can take advantage of that, then that's the important thing.

Q. Recent runner-up in Canada, only player with three wins this year, just comment a little bit about the rest of the season and how excited you are for what lies ahead?

MATT FITZPATRICK: Yeah, obviously a great start today and just feel like that, you know, there's still a lot of big tournaments coming up, which is really nice. If I can hopefully find some form coming into these, the final stretch, particularly in Europe with the Open Championship and then obviously the playoffs, it would be nice to end the season on a real high.

Q. What's the shift like going from a major championship to a place like this where you got to get some birdies?

MATT FITZPATRICK: Yeah, it's something that I probably would have struggled with in the past I feel like. But I think just the way my game's changed with how my approach play's better now, it just gives me a bit more, I don't know what the word is, like possibility of contending, really. I think just having that confidence in my approach play and as well as being able to hit the shots that I see is obviously the biggest key. So I probably put it down to that.

Q. What did you take away from last weekend?

MATT FITZPATRICK: Just struggled off the tee. You got to give yourself a chance at making some scores. Not only a chance of making birdies, but just trying to make comfortable pars. I think for me that's been, that was the big thing at the weekend that I struggled with. I just, I didn't hit my driver very well and I feel like that that was kind of what held me back most of all.

Q. You missed one fairway today, right?

MATT FITZPATRICK: Yeah, yes, I guess I did, yeah.

Q. Did you find something, fix something?

MATT FITZPATRICK: Yeah, I have a different driver this week. That's obviously new. Just getting comfortable with that and I had, you know, felt like I practiced well these first three days as well and just managed to find something that I felt was working a bit better.

Q. If you were able to start hitting the shots that you envision or that you want to hit, what was the thing or process that got you from where you were to being there now?

MATT FITZPATRICK: Well, I think the long and short of it is basically in, I played obviously very well up until Zurich. My driver cracked on the Wednesday of Truist. Then, if you look at my off the tee from then, it's quite telling that obviously there was something in that driver that was helping me out and I struggled to find one since. Through unbelievable effort from the staff at Titleist, you know, it's nothing against those guys, but just for whatever reason there hasn't been one that's kind of managed to suit my eye, I guess, and kind of match my swing intentions. I think swing may have changed a little bit from January to that time as well, so maybe I was kind of making the previous one work well for me and the new one's not having that affect.

Q. Aside from having an equipment issue that it sounds like you're working through, leading up to and going through Zurich, playing at a really high level, shooting good scores, winning, does playing well beget more playing well? Is it something that can almost become a habit or become just the norm?

MATT FITZPATRICK: Yeah, I definitely think so. I think Scottie Scheffler's an unbelievable player, but even on his bad weeks he's playing well. You just got to look at the results. It's the same with Rory, the same with Xander, the top, top players, when you feel like you're swinging well, putting well, chipping well, whatever, you just have that momentum that you can kind of kick on. I feel like I've had that this year with my irons and that's allowed me to score better than I have done previous seasons.

Q. You've been victorious on golf courses where there's really low scores. Obviously you won a U.S. Open, which means under the harshest conditions. Which type of victory, if there is one, is more satisfying to you as a player?

MATT FITZPATRICK: I would always say the harder ones, I feel like. This golf course is obviously renowned for lower scores, which is obviously nice to have that variation from week-to-week from -- you know, last week I think Wyndham wins at 4-under and this week, you know, 4-under's 30th already, or whatever it is, I don't know. I think to me the grind of staying close to par on those tough weeks is more rewarding, I feel like. I think as golfers we're just expected to go make birdies and our expectations are to just make birdies. So when you do win a tournament at 20-under par, then you're like, well, I'm kind of supposed to do that. But in the tournaments where it's closer to par and it's a grind your like, well, I feel like I have achieved something there.

Q. Are you getting used to seeing your brother at PGA TOUR events and has it changed your week-to-week?

MATT FITZPATRICK: Definitely getting used to it. It's definitely really nice to have him here and, yeah, just a lot of fun overall so far.

Q. What's different about the new driver as opposed to the one you had been playing?

MATT FITZPATRICK: It's just a different brand. Obviously I was in one for a long time and, yeah, it was just kind of give it a go, I guess.

Q. People outside the ropes would be like you guys have access to all this stuff, do you think they can sort of appreciate how discerning your eyes can get and how that really does --

MATT FITZPATRICK: Well, I was explaining it earlier this week that it's not as straightforward as everyone thinks. When you fit a golf club, everyone has tendencies, and not to bore everyone, but my tendency is like I like clubs or a driver with the CG closer to the heel. That's kind of where my, where I've lived for basically my whole career. And certain golf clubs are, like, made without that. Just the box one, the one you buy off the rack might have it on the toe side, which if you gave that to me I would hit it 500 yards right or whatever it is. So the detail is really important and it's important to try and get that right as best as you can. Everyone is different, their habits, how they move the club, how they reacts to different clubs. I tried one in Canada where it was literally exactly that, like neutral, neutral, neutral and I hit it 50 yards right, and that's just the way I react. So I think people think that guys just get driver and it's just going to go straight and away you go and there's obviously a lot more to it than that.
