NBC Interview with Mike Tirico
MIKE TIRICO: Reunited with an old friend. How does it feel?
WYNDHAM CLARK: Pretty amazing. It seems just like yesterday, very similar, having to two-putt to win. It was surreal, to be honest.
Q. Let's start with that 50-foot two-putt to win the U.S. Open, similar to LACC, but all the par saves you made yesterday and today. What was the key to being able to do that over and over on these difficult greens?
WYNDHAM CLARK: Oh, my gosh. I played some ugly golf the last two days, but my putter and short game kind of kept me in it. Yeah, I mean, to make all the putts I did with my Ping putter that I love so much has been amazing.
But honestly, it comes down to just believing that good things are going to happen and that you're going to make the putt, and fortunately the ones I needed to make, I did.
Q. There were so many different shots. I just want to pick on one specific, the second shot at 16. You missed the fairway; the lie wasn't very good. Just the process there to get you back in position to get up on the green and then make a very big putt to give you a little bit of a cushion?
WYNDHAM CLARK: Well, it's been a grind these last two, three days. I haven't played the prettiest golf, so I've been into some pretty sketchy spots. So I felt actually kind of comfortable over there, and the ball out of the fescue has been jumping a lot, and I knew I could cover that.
Q. Pretty good putt, too.
WYNDHAM CLARK: Yeah, to make birdie there was honestly a bonus. I just wanted to make par. That was one of the pivotal points of the tournament.
Q. It wasn't an easy day out there on the golf course. A lot of folks were rooting for Scottie trying to win the Career Grand Slam. Where did you find the toughness, the focus, even though you didn't have the momentum behind you with a lot of the crowd cheers, to kind of still persevere and keep your focus and keep getting it done?
WYNDHAM CLARK: Yeah, New York didn't really like me. I love you guys.
But I get it. Some of it's self-deserved. I did some unfortunate things last year that I really regret, and I've been sorry multiple times and I'm still sorry, so hopefully I can win you guys over eventually.
But I get it; they were rooting for Scottie. Grand Slams only happen a few times. He's going to get it. He's the best player in the world. But today it's my day.
Q. Now you're the 24th person, only the 24th, to win multiple U.S. Open Championships. You've evolved and changed; does it make it any sweeter, the journey you've been on to be back here doing this again?
WYNDHAM CLARK: Yeah, the first one was kind of just the breakthrough of knowing I can do it, and then this one was a lot of redemption. Last year was so tough, a terrible year. I left this place in shambles, and it's amazing what a year can do. I'm leaving here this Sunday as a champion, and I'm just so blessed. Thank you, guys.
Q. Lastly, of course, for the last half century, the U.S. Open ends on Father's Day. There was a lot of emotion on the green but then you spun around surprised. Your dad Randall took a red eye in from Denver. When you saw him coming over on the green, what was that like?
WYNDHAM CLARK: Well, that was a shock. My dad hasn't been to many events, and '23 he wasn't there, which was really unfortunate.
For him to be here in person is amazing. Happy Father's Day, Pops. I love you so much. I'm just glad we could share this together.
