THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 20, 2026

Stuart Grehan

Hoylake, Merseyside, England, United Kingdom

Press Conference

Q. Stuart, congratulations. You're the 131st Amateur Champion. Has it sunk in yet?

STUART GREHAN: It's starting to. It's starting to, yeah. Absolutely over the moon. So happy. So much hard work has gone into it. Yeah, it was on my mind all day, but happy.

Q. It looked like a hard-earned win, as well. You know, Matt really gave you a great match.

STUART GREHAN: Yeah, yeah, like this morning I got off to a really slow start. I was really struggling with my swing and kind of lunch came at a good time to reset, and I played really well this afternoon, hit some great shots.

Obviously coming down the stretch there was a little bit of a few iffy ones, but there's so much pressure on and so much at stake, you know, it's bound to happen.

Just played the last hole really, really well, and I said to myself, I can just kind of make a 4. It's a hard pin to make a 3 on. Yeah, got the job done.

Q. What were you telling yourself at lunch? What was that reset all about? How did you spend the lunch break?

STUART GREHAN: Yeah, I kind of went in at lunch on my own. Just took a few minutes, spoke to Dean, and I met with my coach actually, Dave Ruddy, on the range, and we talked through a couple of things. He kind of noticed a tiny bit small on my alignment, so we worked that. I hit some lovely shots on the back 18 there. So, yeah, a little bit like that. Then just kind of stayed in the moment then more so for the last 18.

Q. Did I hear about you switched putters?

STUART GREHAN: I switched putters at the start of the week. Yeah, it's just a bit of a firmer face. Yeah, it's good.

Q. Can you talk to us about the par putt on the 6th in that afternoon match?

STUART GREHAN: Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, I struggled with that tee shot all week. It's visually very, very tough. I just kind of hit a rescue and hit a bunker. I felt like I hit it in the bunker every hole out there today.

But, yeah, I hit a decent shot out of the bunker kind of long left. I many a really bad lie. Like a really bad lie. Just tried to chunk and run it, and it didn't come out. So had a really good 40-footer.

I kind of said to myself, just kind of fancied it. I don't know why. Just one of those moments. Yeah, it was nice to put that one in.

Q. What about the eagle on the 8th?

STUART GREHAN: Yeah, that was pretty good as well. Good rescue and good 8-iron to about 5 feet. Yeah, I just kind of was on a bit of a mental -- starting to play well. Hit some lovely shots coming in.

Q. Can you tell us how special it was to win here in front of your family, but also in front of so many people from your home club that traveled here?

STUART GREHAN: They're amazing. They're the best supportive club I feel like in Ireland, to be honest. They go everywhere. So, yeah, look, a huge shout-out to them and everyone. My boss came over today, my coaches came over, family came over.

I have to say the support was outrageous out there. The atmosphere was brilliant for both of us. To have them out there and doing it in front of them is really incredible.

Q. A couple of weeks you'll be on the biggest stage in golf.

STUART GREHAN: Yeah.

Q. How is that feeling? Has that sunk in yet? What do you think?

STUART GREHAN: Yeah, look, I'm going to be buzzing for that. I love it. I'll absolutely love it.

Hasn't really sunk in yet. Going to the Masters obviously, as well. I haven't even thought of that either. I'll just relish it, take it all in. I'm sure I'm going to go home tonight and sit down on the bed, like, oh, shit. Sorry, language. But, yeah, no, look, just part of winning, I guess, and just absolutely delighted.

Q. A victory over America today. Does that feel like one up already?

STUART GREHAN: Yeah, a little bit. Yeah, yeah. That's what we're gunning towards the whole year is Walker Cup, to be honest. So to have done this week and do what I've done obviously it gets me on the team. Hugely delighted with this, but it would be nice to bring home Walker Cup as well. Haven't won it in ten years. That's something that we really want to do, and I think we can do.
