THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

June 20, 2026

Matt Moloney

Hoylake, Merseyside, England, United Kingdom

Press Conference

Q. (Off microphone) -- 36 holes you've played this week. Does it feel like that many?

MATT MOLONEY: Yeah, yeah, it does. I played St Andrews Trophy as well and came straight from the NCAA National Championships. I'm tired. I'm ready to get home, but yeah, a lot of golf. Definitely feels like.

Q. Did you play any practice rounds here as well?

MATT MOLONEY: I did, I did. Two practice rounds. 18-hole practice rounds at least. It's been a lot of golf. Yeah, it's been a lot of golf. It's been good.

Q. You've clearly taken to it. You spent some time in Ireland, haven't you? Did you play golf there?

MATT MOLONEY: Well, we played a tournament. We played at St Andrews last week. I've not played in Ireland, but I obviously played a couple of rounds at St Andrews and played a few other courses in Scotland, so that helped a lot. I played The Amateur last year, so I got a lot of experience before coming this week, yeah.

Q. Are you a plotter of the ball from tee to green?

MATT MOLONEY: Yeah, yeah, there's holes out here where you are planning to hit it in the rough and not even try to hit the fairway hardly. Yeah, you just got to know where to leave it. The last stretch into it, I really enjoyed looking through that.

Q. I heard a story that you were one night short on your accommodation.

MATT MOLONEY: There was. There was. Yeah, we had a little bit of a screw-up with the scheduling of ours. It was okay. We stayed at the village hotel about 20 minutes from here. It was fine. It wasn't too far.

Q. It's a sort of problem you want, isn't it, because you stayed deep.

MATT MOLONEY: Well, of course, of course, yeah. It was a good problem to have. My mom called me. Where are you staying? I said, I don't know, we'll figure it out. Good fun.

Q. Have people been watching back home on the YouTube?

MATT MOLONEY: Yeah, lots there. Have got a lot of support from friends and family. It's been good.

Q. So they're all really proud?

MATT MOLONEY: Yeah, of course. It's a good run. It obviously didn't go the way I wanted in the end, but yeah, it was very good.

Q. You were very steady this morning. Do you think there was a couple of chances maybe this morning that got away that if you had been a bit more clinical perhaps?

MATT MOLONEY: Yeah, I think the putts just didn't necessarily go my way this morning. I hit some good putts that just didn't go in and either a slight misread or I hit it too hard or just too soft. That's just golf. That's sometimes how it goes.

I wouldn't have done anything different. I felt like I did everything how I would have done it again, but yeah, just didn't necessarily go my way.

Q. Down and still taking it to the 18th again. You must be very proud of your effort over the course of the whole week.

MATT MOLONEY: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I mean, I went to I think every match this week to at least 18 for me. It was close every match I had. It was coming down to the wire. I pulled it out last few. You know, put myself a little too far back this time, but yeah, pretty happy with how it turned out.
